Mbeere North Member of Parliament Hon. Geoffrey Kiringa has alleged that President William Ruto’s administration will continue the importation of GMOs as we import guns. Hon. Geoffrey won the race under the United Democratic Movement led by President William Ruto.
According to him, the way the country imports guns because we don’t produce them in Kenya is the same way it will import GMO products.
“GMO is not a killer technology. Look! T guns, we do not produce them, we import them for the purpose of security. Do we say because they have killed two or three people we don’t need them? The same applies to GMO.” he was quoted.
This comes after the news made headlines that shipping with more than 10000 tones of maize had arrived in Mombasa. However, many have reacted by wondering how first the shipment was done. This includes the former Azimio la Umoja presidential running mate Martha Karua who wondered how quickly it was done before even being gazetted or announced.
The importation of GMO products is expected for at least six months to ensure food security is maintained according to trade cabinet secretary Moses Kuria.
