Ruto pledges to transform Nairobi into world-class city

President William Ruto has outlined an ambitious development agenda aimed at transforming Nairobi into a world-class capital city.

Addressing residents in Pipeline, Embakasi, on Sunday, Ruto said the government is implementing reforms to tackle key challenges, including poor waste management, informal settlements, water shortages, deteriorating roads, and unreliable electricity.

“If we are going to move Kenya to the first world, Nairobi is going to lead. That is why we are determined to transform this city. We will do anything and everything to change Nairobi,” he said.

The head of state revealed that one priority road will be built in each of the 85 electoral wards, alongside the Maragua 4 Dam project to boost water supply in the city.

Ruto also pledged a comprehensive garbage management service starting April 1, 2026, which will include the construction of a treatment plant at the Dandora Dumpsite to manage waste, produce fertiliser, and generate energy.

“Nairobi cannot be a city in garbage; we must clean it,” he said, adding that national government funds will complement county resources to achieve this goal.

He noted that the government is investing Ksh220 billion in Nairobi to build 169,000 affordable housing units, 16 modern markets, and hostels to accommodate 14,000 students.

Additionally, 700 classrooms are being constructed in public schools to provide space for 21,000 learners.
