NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 24 — A fire broke out at Ngao Girls Secondary School in Tana River County on Monday evening following an explosion in one of the dormitories.
Tana River County official Joseph Wamuti said the incident occurred at about 7.15pm in Tarasaa Sub-County while students were attending evening prep studies.
“The students were in their evening preps at the time of the incident when they heard a loud bang and noticed flames emanating from the dormitory,” Wamuti said.
The fire spread quickly through the dormitory, destroying beds, mattresses, and students’ personal belongings before members of the local community and school administration intervened to contain the blaze using available resources.
Emergency responders, including the fire brigade and security agencies, later arrived to support containment efforts and secure the area.
No fatalities were reported.
“The school administration, with support from teachers and Board of Management members, has since accounted for all students, with no fatalities reported,” Wamuti said.
A few students sustained minor injuries and were treated at Ngao Sub-County Hospital, where they remain in stable condition.
Police and other emergency response teams have launched investigations to determine the cause of the fire, while authorities continue to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damage.
