KIAMBU, Kenya Mar 25 – A heritage conservation organisation has accused the Kenyan government of violating a protected historical site in Kiambu County following the commencement of construction under the Affordable Housing Programme.
The group, Kenya Unity for Memorial Peace Heritage and Culture Organisation, claims that heavy machinery was deployed last Tuesday at Githunguri Kiawairera, flattening land believed to contain the remains of at least 54 Mau Mau freedom fighters executed during the colonial period.
According to the organisation, the site is legally protected under Gazette Notice Nos. 244 and 245 of 2011, and any form of development on the land raises serious legal and ethical concerns.
The group has questioned the legitimacy of the construction works, noting that there is an ongoing court case seeking to halt the project and preserve the site’s historical significance.
They argue that the alleged disturbance amounts to desecration of a heritage site, warning that such actions risk erasing critical chapters of Kenya’s struggle for independence.
