Court of Appeal Judges to Elect New President in High-Stakes Vote

NAIROBI, Kenya Jun 22 – Judges of the Court of Appeal are set to elect a new President of the Court of Appeal on Monday, in a leadership contest that will shape the direction of Kenya’s second-highest court.

The election follows the expiry of the term of former Court of Appeal President Justice Daniel Musinga, whose tenure officially ended on May 24, 2026.

Four senior judges are contesting for the influential position. They are Justice Gatembu Kairu, Justice Patrick Kiage, Lady Justice Agnes Murgor, and Lady Justice Lydia Achode.

According to the Judiciary, the election will be conducted through a secret ballot process and overseen by officials from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure transparency and credibility.

The President of the Court of Appeal plays a critical role in the administration and leadership of the appellate court, which handles appeals from the High Court and other tribunals across the country.

The outcome of the election is expected to attract significant attention within legal and political circles, given the Court of Appeal’s central role in handling major constitutional, electoral and public interest cases.

The Judiciary is expected to announce the results later on Monday afternoon after the voting exercise is concluded.

The election comes at a time when Kenya’s Judiciary continues to face heightened public scrutiny over the handling of politically sensitive and constitutional matters.
