NAIROBI, Kenya Jun 25 – Opposition leaders, activists, and families of victims killed during the June 2024 anti-government protests on Thursday called for police restraint as they began a peaceful Gen Z memorial march from Serena Hotel to Parliament Buildings.
The procession, organised to honour those who lost their lives during last year’s Gen Z-led demonstrations, is expected to culminate in the laying of wreaths and lighting of candles outside Parliament.
Participants who included Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa and David Maraga urged security agencies to allow peaceful commemorations and avoid confrontations as mourners and demonstrators marched through Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
Families of victims said the memorial march was intended to remember loved ones killed during the protests and renew calls for justice, accountability, and reforms within security agencies.
Opposition leaders accompanying the procession appealed for calm and restraint from both protesters and police officers amid heightened security deployment across the capital.
The memorial activities come as anti-riot police, General Service Unit (GSU) officers, and other security personnel maintain a heavy presence around Parliament and key government installations.
Barbed wire barricades and police roadblocks were mounted across several roads leading into the CBD, causing major traffic disruptions and restricting movement within parts of Nairobi.
Despite the heightened tensions, organisers insisted the march would remain peaceful and focused on commemorating victims of the June 2024 protests that erupted over the controversial Finance Bill and the rising cost of living.
The Gen Z-led demonstrations last year sparked nationwide protests and drew international attention after clashes between protesters and police resulted in deaths, injuries, and widespread destruction.
Human rights organisations have since continued pushing for accountability and protection of constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and expression.
