{"id":100868,"date":"2024-10-31T15:03:03","date_gmt":"2024-10-31T15:03:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/10\/31\/russia-fines-google-more-money-than-there-is-in-entire-world\/"},"modified":"2024-10-31T15:03:03","modified_gmt":"2024-10-31T15:03:03","slug":"russia-fines-google-more-money-than-there-is-in-entire-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/russia-fines-google-more-money-than-there-is-in-entire-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia fines Google more money than there is in entire world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A Russian court has fined Google two undecillion roubles \u2013 a two followed by 36 zeroes \u2013 for restricting Russian state media channels on YouTube.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In dollar terms that means the tech giant has been told to pay $20,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being one of the world\u2019s wealthiest companies, that is considerably more than the $2 trillion Google is worth.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it is far greater than the world\u2019s total GDP, which is estimated by the International Monetary Fund to be $110 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>The fine has reached such a gargantuan level because \u2013 state news agency Tass says \u2013 it doubles every day it is not paid.<\/p>\n<p>According to Tass, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov admitted he \u201ccannot even pronounce this number\u201d but urged \u201cGoogle management to pay attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company has not commented publicly or responded to a BBC request for a statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A fine mess<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Russia media outlet RBC reports the fine on Google relates to the restriction of content of 17 Russian media channels on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>While this started in 2020, it escalated after Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years later.<\/p>\n<p>That saw most Western companies pull out of Russia, with doing business there also tightly restricted by sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>Russian media outlets were also banned in Europe \u2013 prompting retaliatory measures from Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>This development is the latest escalation between Russia and the US tech giant.<\/p>\n<p>In May, 2021, Russia\u2019s media regulator Roskomnadzor accused Google of restricting YouTube access to Russian media outlets, including RT and Sputnik, and supporting \u201cillegal protest activity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in July, 2022, Russia fined Google 21.1bn rouble (\u00a3301m) for failing to restrict access to what it called \u201cprohibited\u201d material about the war in Ukraine and other content.<\/p>\n<p>There is virtually no press freedom in Russia, with independent news outlets and freedom of expression severely curtailed.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/russia-fines-google-more-money-than-there-is-in-entire-world\/\">Russia fines Google more money than there is in entire world<\/a> first appeared on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/\">KBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/russia-fines-google-more-money-than-there-is-in-entire-world\/\">Russia fines Google more money than there is in entire world<\/a> appeared first on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/\">KBC<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Russian court has fined Google two undecillion roubles \u2013 a two followed by 36 zeroes \u2013 for restricting Russian state media channels on YouTube.
