{"id":101712,"date":"2024-11-09T06:02:53","date_gmt":"2024-11-09T06:02:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/11\/09\/us-announces-charges-in-alleged-iranian-plot-to-assassinate-trump\/"},"modified":"2024-11-09T06:02:53","modified_gmt":"2024-11-09T06:02:53","slug":"us-announces-charges-in-alleged-iranian-plot-to-assassinate-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/us-announces-charges-in-alleged-iranian-plot-to-assassinate-trump\/","title":{"rendered":"US announces charges in alleged Iranian plot to assassinate Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US prosecutors announced charges on Friday in an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate former president Donald Trump and a prominent dissident Iranian-American journalist.<\/p>\n<p>The foiled assassination plot on Trump was allegedly directed by Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to avenge the death of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in 2020 in a US strike ordered by then-president Trump, the Justice Department said.<\/p>\n<p>Farhad Shakeri, 51, an Afghan national who is believed to be in Iran, was \u201ctasked\u201d by the IRGC with providing a plan to kill Trump, the department said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Shakeri and two other men, Carlisle Rivera, 49, and Jonathon Loadholt, 36, both of New York, were charged separately with plotting to kill an Iranian-American dissident in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Rivera and Loadholt are both in US custody and made a court appearance in New York on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe charges announced today expose Iran\u2019s continued brazen attempts to target US citizens, including President-elect Donald Trump, other government leaders and dissidents who criticize the regime in Tehran,\u201d FBI Director Christopher Wray said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, who defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in Tuesday\u2019s US presidential election, faced two other separate assassination attempts this year, including a shooting at a campaign rally when a bullet grazed his ear.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s foreign ministry on Saturday called the allegations that Tehran was behind a plot against Trump \u201ctotally unfounded\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The foreign ministry \u201crejects allegations that Iran is implicated in an assassination attempt targeting former or current American officials,\u201d spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said in a statement.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n\u2013 \u2018Network of criminal associates\u2019 \u2013<\/strong><br \/>\nThe US Justice Department described suspect Shakeri as an \u201cIRGC asset residing in Tehran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It said he immigrated to the United States as a child and was deported around 2008 after serving 14 years in prison for robbery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn recent months, Shakeri has used a network of criminal associates he met in prison in the United States to supply the IRGC with operatives to conduct surveillance and assassinations of IRGC targets,\u201d the Justice Department said.<\/p>\n<p>It said Loadholt and Rivera, at Shakeri\u2019s direction, spent months conducting surveillance of a US citizen of Iranian origin who is an outspoken critic of the Iranian government and has been the target of multiple prior kidnapping and murder plots.<\/p>\n<p>She was not identified in court documents but appears to be dissident journalist Masih Alinejad.<\/p>\n<p>A general in the Revolutionary Guards was charged by US prosecutors in late October in connection with a separate plot to assassinate Alinejad, who lives in New York.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013 \u2018Money\u2019s not an issue\u2019 \u2013<\/strong><br \/>\nAccording to the criminal complaint against Shakeri, he allegedly disclosed the plot to assassinate Trump in telephone conversations with FBI agents in recent months.<\/p>\n<p>Shakeri held the conversations with FBI agents because he was hoping to obtain a sentence reduction for a person who is imprisoned in the United States, it said.<\/p>\n<p>Shakeri told the FBI he was approached by an IRGC official in September about organizing the assassination of Trump.<\/p>\n<p>He allegedly told the IRGC official it would cost a \u201chuge\u201d amount of money, to which the official responded: \u201cMoney\u2019s not an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On October 7, Shakeri said he was asked to come up with a plan to kill Trump within seven days.<\/p>\n<p>The IRGC official allegedly said that if Shakeri was unable to come up with a plan in that timeframe, the IRGC would seek to kill Trump after the election because it assessed he would lose and it would be easier to assassinate him after the vote.<\/p>\n<p>The United States has repeatedly accused Iran of seeking to assassinate US officials in retaliation for the killing of Soleimani.
