{"id":101891,"date":"2024-11-11T10:03:10","date_gmt":"2024-11-11T10:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/11\/11\/haitis-prime-minister-ousted-after-six-months-2\/"},"modified":"2024-11-11T10:03:10","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T10:03:10","slug":"haitis-prime-minister-ousted-after-six-months-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/haitis-prime-minister-ousted-after-six-months-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Haiti\u2019s prime minister ousted after six months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille has been fired by the country\u2019s ruling council less than six months after he took office.<\/p>\n<p>An executive order, signed by eight of the council\u2019s nine members, named businessman and former Haiti Senate candidate Alix Didier Fils-Aime as Conille\u2019s replacement.<\/p>\n<p>Conille, a former United Nations official, was brought in to lead Haiti through an ongoing, gang-led security crisis and had been expected to help pave the way for the country\u2019s first presidential elections since 2016.<\/p>\n<p>He described his ousting as illegal, saying in a letter \u2013 seen by Reuters news agency \u2013 that it raised \u201cserious concerns\u201d about Haiti\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>Haiti currently has neither a president nor parliament and, according to its constitution, only the latter can sack a sitting prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>Conille was sworn in on 3 June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis resolution, taken outside any legal and constitutional framework, raises serious concerns about its legitimacy,\u201d Conille\u2019s letter was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Haiti\u2019s transitional presidential council (TPC) was created in April after Ariel Henry, Conille\u2019s predecessor, was forced from office by a network of gangs that had taken over parts of the capital Port-au-Prince.<\/p>\n<p>Henry left Haiti to attend a summit in Guyana on 25 February 2024 and gang members subsequently seized the city\u2019s international airport, preventing him from returning.<\/p>\n<p>The TPC was tasked with restoring democratic order to the Caribbean country, where such violence is rife.<\/p>\n<p>More than 3,600 people have been killed in Haiti since January and more than 500,000 have had to leave their homes, according to the UN, which describes Haiti as being one of the poorest countries in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Two million Haitians currently face emergency levels of hunger,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/countries\/haiti#:~:text=The%20number%20of%20food-insecure,42%25)%20since%20August%202023.\" rel=\"noopener\">UN data\u00a0<\/a>shows, while almost half the population \u201cdo not have enough to eat\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>One of the country\u2019s most powerful gang leaders, Jimmy Ch\u00e9rizier, also known as Barbecue, previously said he would be prepared to end the violence if armed groups were allowed to be involved in talks to establish a new government.<\/p>\n<p>Presidential elections were last held in Haiti eight years ago, when Jovenel Mo\u00efse of the T\u00e8t Kale party was elected.<\/p>\n<p>Since his murder in July 2021, the post of president has been vacant.<\/p>\n<p>Gangs in Haiti have capitalised on the power vacuum and expanded their control over swathes of the country, which has effectively been rendered lawless in places.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, it was reported that\u00a0hundreds of police officers had been deployed to Haiti from Kenya, with more set to join them in November.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille has been fired by the country\u2019s ruling council less than six months after he took office.
