{"id":102148,"date":"2024-11-13T11:03:35","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T11:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/11\/13\/afghan-taliban-carry-out-sixth-public-execution-since-2021\/"},"modified":"2024-11-13T11:03:35","modified_gmt":"2024-11-13T11:03:35","slug":"afghan-taliban-carry-out-sixth-public-execution-since-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/afghan-taliban-carry-out-sixth-public-execution-since-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Afghan Taliban carry out sixth public execution since 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Taliban authorities in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday executed a convicted murderer by gunfire at a sports stadium, in the sixth public execution since their return to power.<\/p>\n<p>The condemned man was shot with three bullets to the chest by a member of the victim\u2019s family in front of thousands of spectators in Gardez, the capital of Paktia province, according to an AFP journalist at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>The evening before the execution the governor\u2019s office called on officials and residents to \u201cattend this event\u201d on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA murderer was sentenced to retaliation punishment,\u201d said a statement from Afghanistan\u2019s supreme court which named the condemned as Mohammad Ayaz Asad.<\/p>\n<p>The execution order was signed by the Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, the court said.<\/p>\n<p>The convict had been in detention since before the Taliban came to power for killing another man, Habibullah Saif-ul-Qatal, while the case was \u201cexamined very precisely and repeatedly\u201d by three military courts, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The victim\u2019s family was given the opportunity to stay the execution, but they refused, the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>Among the crowd at the execution were high level officials, including Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018Eye for an eye\u2019 \u2013<br \/>\nPublic executions were common during the Taliban\u2019s first rule from 1996 to 2001, but according to an AFP tally only a handful have been carried out since their return to power in August 2021.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, Akhundzada ordered judges to fully implement all aspects of the Taliban government\u2019s interpretation of Islamic law \u2014 including \u201ceye for an eye\u201d punishments known as \u201cqisas\u201d, allowing for the death penalty in retribution for the crime of murder.<\/p>\n<p>In February, three public executions were carried out within a week.<\/p>\n<p>Two men were executed by multiple gunshots to the back in front of a large crowd in eastern Ghazni city, followed days later by a similar public execution in northern Jowzjan province.<\/p>\n<p>Corporal punishments \u2014 mainly flogging \u2014 have been common under the Taliban authorities and employed for crimes including theft, adultery and alcohol consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Law and order is central to the severe ideology of the Taliban, who emerged from the chaos of a civil war following the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most infamous images from that era depicted the 1999 execution of a woman wearing an all-covering burqa in a Kabul stadium.
