Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned as \u201cantisemitic\u201d a decision by the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for war crimes against him and ex-Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.<\/p>\n
He said the ICC was \u201cfalsely\u201d accusing them \u201cof deliberately targeting civilians, this when we do everything in our power to avoid civilian casualties\u201d.<\/p>\n
The ICC also issued a warrant for Hamas commander Mohammed Deif. Israel says he was killed in Gaza in July.<\/p>\n
ICC judges said there were \u201creasonable grounds\u201d to believe the three men bore \u201ccriminal responsibility\u201d for crimes during the war between Israel and Hamas.<\/p>\n
US President Joe Biden called the ICC move against Israeli officials \u201coutrageous\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhatever the ICC might imply, there is no equivalence \u2013 none \u2013 between Israel and Hamas,\u201d Biden said in a statement\u00a0\u201cWe will always stand with Israel against threats to its security.\u201d<\/p>\n
Both Israel and Hamas reject the allegations made by the ICC.<\/p>\n
In a statement on Thursday, Netanyahu said: \u201cThe antisemitic decision of the international court in The Hague is a modern Dreyfus trial, and it will end the same way.\u201d<\/p>\n
He was referring to a high-profile case of antisemitism in France just over a century ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe court in The Hague accuses us of a deliberate policy of starvation,\u201d the Israeli PM said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis when we have supplied Gaza with 700,000 tons of food to feed the people of Gaza. We issue millions of text messages, phone calls, leaflets to the citizens of Gaza to get them out of harm\u2019s way \u2013 while the Hamas terrorists do everything in their power to keep them in harm\u2019s way, including shooting them, using them as human shields.\u201d<\/p>\n
Netanyahu said Israel would \u201cnot recognise the validity\u201d of the ICC\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n
Just this week, the UN warned that Palestinians were \u201cfacing diminishing conditions for survival\u201d in parts of northern Gaza under siege by Israeli forces because virtually no aid had been delivered in 40 days.<\/p>\n
Gallant said the ICC placed \u201cthe state of Israel and the murderous leaders of Hamas in the same row and thus legitimises the murder of babies, the rape of women and the abduction of the elderly from their beds\u201d.<\/p>\n
Ehud Olmert, a former Israeli prime minister, told the BBC that while he was critical of Netanyahu\u2019s handling of the conflict with Hamas, he did not agree with the ICC\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n
\u201cIsrael has not committed genocide or war crimes that deserve these charges against the prime minister and the minister of defence,\u201d Olmert told Radio 4\u2019s World Tonight programme.<\/p>\n
Hamas made no mention of the Deif warrant but said the move against Netanyahu and Gallant constituted an \u201cimportant historical precedent, and a correction to a long path of historical injustice against our people\u201d.<\/p>\n
Palestinians in Gaza expressed hope Israeli leaders would now be brought to justice.<\/p>\n
Israel denies the allegation that its forces are committing genocide in Gaza, which is the subject of a separate case before the International Court of Justice.<\/p>\n
The impact of the warrants announced by the ICC will depend on whether the court\u2019s 124 member states \u2013 which do not include Israel or its ally, the US \u2013 decide to enforce them or not.<\/p>\n
Several European countries have said they respect ICC decisions. Downing Street said the British government respected the independence of the ICC.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor\u2019s case against the three men stems from 7 October 2023, when Hamas gunmen attacked Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 others back to Gaza as hostages.<\/p>\n
Israel responded by launching a military campaign to eliminate Hamas, during which at least 44,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the territory\u2019s Hamas-run health ministry.<\/p>\n
For Deif, an ICC pre-trial chamber found reasonable grounds to believe he was \u201cresponsible for the crimes against humanity of murder; extermination; torture; and rape and other form of sexual violence; as well as the war crimes of murder, cruel treatment, torture; taking hostages; outrages upon personal dignity; and rape and other form of sexual violence\u201d.<\/p>\n
It also said there were reasonable grounds to believe the crimes against humanity were \u201cpart of a widespread and systematic attack directed by Hamas and other armed groups against the civilian population of Israel\u201d.<\/p>\n
For Netanyahu and Gallant, who was replaced as defence minister earlier this month, the chamber found reasonable grounds to believe that they \u201ceach bear criminal responsibility for the following crimes as co-perpetrators for committing the acts jointly with others: the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare; and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts\u201d.<\/p>\n
It also found reasonable grounds to believe that \u201ceach bear criminal responsibility as civilian superiors for the war crime of intentionally directing an attack against the civilian population\u201d.<\/p>\n
