{"id":103620,"date":"2024-11-28T08:04:32","date_gmt":"2024-11-28T08:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/11\/28\/special-economic-zones-in-kenya-create-7000-jobs-contribute-sh91bn-to-gdp\/"},"modified":"2024-11-28T08:04:32","modified_gmt":"2024-11-28T08:04:32","slug":"special-economic-zones-in-kenya-create-7000-jobs-contribute-sh91bn-to-gdp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/special-economic-zones-in-kenya-create-7000-jobs-contribute-sh91bn-to-gdp\/","title":{"rendered":"Special Economic Zones in Kenya create 7,000 Jobs, contribute Sh91bn to GDP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 28 \u2013 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Kenya have significantly contributed to the country\u2019s economic growth, creating over 7,000 direct jobs, including 3,000 jobs in the past 12 months alone. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The zones have also contributed approximately Sh91 billion to Kenya\u2019s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), demonstrating the critical role SEZs play in the nation\u2019s economic development.<\/p>\n<p>The impressive results are largely attributed to the incentives provided to investors by the Government of Kenya, which has created a conducive environment for growth and development within these zones. <\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s initiatives are designed to maximize the potential of SEZs, further driving employment and economic output.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the opening of the 9th African Special Economic Zone Organization (AEZO) Annual Meeting at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC), Dr. Juma Mukhwana, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Industry, emphasized the government\u2019s commitment to ensuring SEZs achieve their full potential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are working around the clock to ensure that Special Economic Zones succeed in this country, with the help of the Special Economic Zones Authority. We understand the immense potential these economic zones hold for job creation and the contribution to Kenya\u2019s revenue and GDP,\u201d said Dr. Mukhwana.<\/p>\n<p>The Annual Meeting, which gathers SEZs from across the African continent, serves as a platform to exchange success stories, identify challenges, and promote greater collaboration among African countries. <\/p>\n<p>One key discussion point at this year\u2019s meeting was the harmonization of operations across borders.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mukhwana also highlighted Kenya\u2019s leadership on issues such as minimum wage standards, urging other African nations to align their minimum wage policies to create a more competitive environment for investment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKenya has been ahead of many African countries in setting minimum wage standards. While this is an achievement, it sometimes positions Kenya as a more expensiveinvestment destination. We encourage other African countries to also set minimum wage benchmarks to ensure a level playing field for all,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Special Economic Zones play a pivotal role in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), enabling them to integrate into global value chains.
