An Azerbaijan Airlines passenger jet crashed on Wednesday in western Kazakhstan, with 35 people feared dead, officials said.<\/p>\n
Azerbaijani authorities said 32 people had survived the crash of the Embraer 190 near the city of Aktau, an oil and gas hub on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea.<\/p>\n
With Azerbaijan Airlines reported that 67 people were on board \u2014 62 passengers and five crew members \u2014 it is feared that 35 may have perished in the crash.<\/p>\n
The plane was flying from the Azerbaijani capital Baku on the western shore of the Caspian to the city of Grozny in Chechnya in southern Russia.<\/p>\n
\u201cA plane doing the Baku-Grozny route crashed near the city of Aktau. It belongs to Azerbaijan Airlines,\u201d the Kazakh transport ministry said on Telegram.<\/p>\n
Azerbaijan Airlines, the country\u2019s flag carrier, said the plane \u201cmade an emergency landing\u201d around three kilometres (1.9 miles) from Aktau.<\/p>\n
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev declared Thursday a day of national mourning and cancelled a planned visit to Russia for an informal summit of leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), a grouping of former Soviet nations.<\/p>\n
The Kazakh transport ministry said the plane was carrying 37 nationals from Azerbaijan, six from Kazakhstan, three from Kyrgyzstan and 16 from Russia.<\/p>\n
The office of Azerbaijan\u2019s prosecutor general said: \u201cAccording to available data, 32 people survived the crash.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe cannot disclose any investigation results at this time. All possible scenarios are being examined, and the necessary expert analyses are underway,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cAn investigative team, led by the deputy prosecutor general of Azerbaijan, has been dispatched to Kazakhstan and is working at the crash site.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Kazakh emergency situations ministry said its staff put out a fire which broke out when the plane crashed. It said 150 emergency workers were at the scene.<\/p>\n The health ministry said a special flight was being sent from the Kazakh capital Astana with specialist doctors to treat the injured.<\/p>\n Aliyev\u2019s office said the president \u201cordered the prompt initiation of urgent measures to investigate the causes of the disaster\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cI extend my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the crash\u2026 and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,\u201d Aliyev said in a social media post.<\/p>\n Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with Aliyev and also \u201cexpressed his condolences in connection with the crash\u201d, his spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a news conference.<\/p>\n A Russian emergency situations ministry had been sent to Aktau with medical personnel and other equipment, Putin said later as he opened the CIS leaders\u2019 meeting in Saint Petersburg.<\/p>\n Azerbaijan\u2019s first lady Mehriban Aliyeva, who is also the country\u2019s first vice president, said she was \u201cdeeply saddened by the news of the tragic loss of lives in the plane crash near Aktau\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cI extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. Wishing them strength and patience!
