{"id":107748,"date":"2025-01-15T13:03:55","date_gmt":"2025-01-15T13:03:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2025\/01\/15\/ntsa-proposes-additional-measures-to-enhance-the-safety-of-school-transport\/"},"modified":"2025-01-15T13:03:55","modified_gmt":"2025-01-15T13:03:55","slug":"ntsa-proposes-additional-measures-to-enhance-the-safety-of-school-transport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/ntsa-proposes-additional-measures-to-enhance-the-safety-of-school-transport\/","title":{"rendered":"NTSA proposes additional measures to enhance the safety of school transport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 15 \u2014 The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has proposed new measures aimed at improving children\u2019s safety as they board and disembark from school buses.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NTSA revealed plans to introduce crossing guards at designated locations among key measures. <\/p>\n<p>The guards will be responsible for directing, controlling, and managing traffic in areas where students enter or exit schools or at designated pedestrian crossings.<\/p>\n<p>The Authority also proposes vehicle attendants in school transport vehicles to assist students during embarking and disembarking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPick-up and drop-off hours within school zones can be very dangerous for children, and measures must be taken to safeguard their safety,\u201d NTSA said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stop signals<\/h2>\n<p>Additionally, NTSA proposes equipping school buses with a reflectorized red \u2018stop signal arm\u2019 at the front and rear for vehicles longer than 30 feet.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018stop signal arm\u2019 is a device that extends outward from the side of a school bus to signal other motorists to stop while students are boarding or alighting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMotorists will be expected to stop until the arm folds away and the lights stop flashing,\u201d NTSA added.<\/p>\n<p>NTSA proposed in the Draft Traffic (School Transport) Rules 2024 that anyone who fails to stop for a school bus would be guilty of an offense and, upon conviction, would face suspension of their driving license for at least six months.<\/p>\n<p>Also proposed, is a requirement that all school transport vehicles be equipped with at least one fire extinguisher conforming to applicable standards, readily accessible for use.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, all school buses are to be fitted with a vehicular telematics system, including a passenger-facing camera.<\/p>\n<p>The buses will also be required to display the words <em>\u2018SCHOOL BUS\u2019<\/em> on both the front and rear. <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the rear of the buses must include the words <em>\u2018DO NOT PASS WHEN RED LIGHTS ARE FLASHING\u2019<\/em> in block letters at least 8 inches tall in black.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 15 \u2014 The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has proposed new measures aimed at improving children\u2019s safety as they board and disembark from school buses.
