{"id":108473,"date":"2025-01-23T08:03:43","date_gmt":"2025-01-23T08:03:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2025\/01\/23\/1500-active-duty-troops-headed-to-us-mexico-border\/"},"modified":"2025-01-23T08:03:43","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T08:03:43","slug":"1500-active-duty-troops-headed-to-us-mexico-border","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/1500-active-duty-troops-headed-to-us-mexico-border\/","title":{"rendered":"1,500 active-duty troops headed to US-Mexico border"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US President Donald Trump told US government agencies to prepare to \u201cimmediately repel, repatriate, and remove\u201d undocumented immigrants as part of a wider effort to fight what he\u2019s termed an \u201cinvasion\u201d across the southern border.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s order comes as US officials announce the deployment of additional active duty troops to the border, and as processes that allow swift deportations are expanded.<\/p>\n<p>The US also moved to cancel all refugee travel and processing, leaving thousands stranded as they wait to come to the US.<\/p>\n<p>White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump is \u201csending a very strong message\u201d to people around the world with the actions.<\/p>\n<p>An executive action, posted to the White House\u2019s website, argues that the measures are necessary to prevent undocumented immigrants from entering the US, \u201cinvading\u201d US communities and \u201cimposing billions of dollars of costs\u201d on state and local governments.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters after Trump signed the order, Ms Leavitt said that the border was a \u201cnumber one priority\u201d for the president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are thinking about breaking the laws of the United States of America, you will be returned home,\u201d Leavitt said of Trump\u2019s message. \u201cYou will be arrested. You will be prosecuted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Leavitt also confirmed that 1,500 additional troops would be sent to the US-Mexico border.<\/p>\n<p>The newly inaugurated president has signed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cwyjqgl2erzo\">a flurry of immigration and border-related actions<\/a>\u00a0and decrees this week aimed at cracking down on immigration.<\/p>\n<p>The orders include tackling the definition of birthright citizenship and declaring illegal immigration at the border a national emergency.<\/p>\n<p>A<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/public-inspection.federalregister.gov\/2025-01720.pdf\">\u00a0notice posted\u00a0<\/a>on the website of the Federal Register says the expedited removal policy took effect on the evening of 21 January.<\/p>\n<p>The policy, which has traditionally been limited to undocumented migrants detained within 100 miles (160km) of the country\u2019s international borders, now allows officers to use it anywhere in the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe effect of this change will be to enhance national security and public safety \u2013 while reducing government costs \u2013 by facilitating prompting immigration determinations,\u201d the notice reads.<\/p>\n<p>It adds that the change will allow the Department of Homeland Security to address \u201cthe large volume of aliens\u201d in the US illegally and ensure the \u201cprompt removal\u2026of those not entitled to enter, remain, or be provided relief or protection\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The expanded policy could be challenged in court.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, \u201cunauthorised\u201d immigrants detained in the US were given a notice to appear in immigration court, where they could present their case for asylum.<\/p>\n<p>Deportation proceedings typically couldn\u2019t begin until a judge issued a decision.<\/p>\n<p>But earlier this week, Trump cited an immigration law \u2013 212(f) \u2013 that allows the president to suspend the entry of foreign nationals deemed \u201cdetrimental\u201d to the US.<\/p>\n<p>Citing internal documents and US officials, CBS has reported that the policy also applies to the US border with Canada and to Customs and Border Protection\u2019s maritime sectors, such as Florida.<\/p>\n<p>The separate order to stop refugee travel and processing comes just days after Trump signed an executive order suspending the US\u2019s Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP), saying America \u201clacks the ability to absorb large numbers of migrants, and in particular, refugees, into its communities in a manner that does not compromise the availability of resources for Americans\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It halts USRAP until \u201cfurther entry into the United States of refugees aligns with the interests of the United States\u201d, the order says.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,600 Afghans who had already been approved to come to the US have had their travel plans cancelled, prompting an advocacy group, Afghan USRAP Refugees, to pen an open letter to President Trump.<\/p>\n<p>More than 3,000 other Afghan nationals are waiting in Albania to be resettled in the US.<\/p>\n<p>In another significant departure from the Biden administration\u2019s immigration policies announced on Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security has rescinded existing guidelines that prevent immigration officers from entering \u201csensitive\u201d areas such as schools.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, DHS said that the guidelines \u201cthwart\u201d law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis action empowers the brave men and women in CBP [Customs and Border Protection] and ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] to enforce our immigration laws and catch criminal aliens \u2013 including murderers and rapists \u2013 who have illegally come into our country,\u201d a DHS spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesman added that \u201cthe Trump administration will not tie the hands\u201d of law enforcement, and expects them to \u201cuse common sense.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US President Donald Trump told US government agencies to prepare to \u201cimmediately repel, repatriate, and remove\u201d undocumented immigrants as part of a wider effort to fight what he\u2019s termed an \u201cinvasion\u201d across the southern border.
