US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday seeking to ban transgender athletes from participating in women\u2019s sports, in his latest move targeting transgender people since returning to office.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom now on women\u2019s sports will be only for women,\u201d Trump said before he signed the order at the White House, surrounded by dozens of children and female athletes.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith this executive order the war on women\u2019s sports is over.\u201d<\/p>\n
Top Republicans including US House Speaker Mike Johnson and firebrand Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene were among those in the audience to watch the signing ceremony.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will defend the proud tradition of female athletes, and we will not allow men to beat up, injure and cheat our women and our girls,\u201d Trump added to applause and cheers.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s order allows US government agencies to deny funds to schools that allow transgender athletes to compete on women\u2019s teams.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you let men take over women\u2019s sports teams or invade your locker rooms, you will be investigated\u2026 and risk your federal funding,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which regulates student athletics in colleges across the country, welcomed the order and said they would align to it \u201cin the coming days.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe strongly believe that clear, consistent, and uniform eligibility standards would best serve today\u2019s student-athletes instead of a patchwork of conflicting state laws and court decisions,\u201d said NCAA president Charlie Baker in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo that end, President Trump\u2019s order provides a clear, national standard,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Trump also said he would now push the International Olympic Committee to change its rules on transgender athletes before the 2028 Los Angeles Games, and had ordered Secretary of State Marco Rubio to tell the IOC \u201cwe want them to change everything\u2026 having to do with this absolutely ridiculous subject.\u201d<\/p>\n
The IOC allows each international sports federation to set their own rules on the issue.<\/p>\n
\u201cWorking with the respective International Sports Federations, the IOC will continue to explain and discuss the various topics with the relevant authorities,\u201d an IOC spokesperson told AFP.<\/p>\n
Trump said he had also directed Homeland Security chief Kristi Noem to deny visa applications \u201cmade by men attempting to fraudulently enter the United States while identifying themselves as women athletes to try and get into the Games.\u201d Republican Trump has repeatedly targeted gender non-conforming people in a blitz of orders pushing his radical right-wing agenda at the start of his second term.<\/p>\n At his inauguration speech he announced that US government policy would only recognize two genders, male and female \u2014 ending the practice of providing a third gender option in some settings.<\/p>\n Days later he signed an order to rid the military of what he called \u201ctransgender ideology\u201d and effectively ban transgender troops.<\/p>\n He also issued an order to restrict gender transition procedures for people under age 19.<\/p>\n The slew of actions comes despite the fact that transgender people make up only a small minority of the US population.<\/p>\n During the 2024 election campaign he repeatedly hammered Democrats on the divisive issue of transgender rights, capitalizing on a broader culture war over the topic.<\/p>\n One of Trump\u2019s most successful attack lines against his election rival Kamala Harris \u2014 \u201cKamala Harris is for they\/them.
