More than 20 million egg-laying chickens in the United States died last quarter because of bird flu, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. With bird flu continuing to spread, the egg shortage may not improve soon.\u00a0\u201cWe can\u2019t begin fixing it the next day. It is really a six-to-nine-month process. It\u2019s causing some shortages in certain markets that are intermittent and localized,\u201d Emily Metz, president and CEO of the American Egg Board, was quoted by CNN as saying in January.\u00a0If the problem turns political, it could hurt the current administration, at a time when inflation for food and shelter is sky-high, political observers said. High egg prices \u201care a staple for many people and therefore a very visible cost.
