BBC \u2013 The US has launched a \u201cdecisive and powerful\u201d wave of air strikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen, President Donald Trump has said, citing the armed group\u2019s attacks on shipping in the Red Sea as the reason.<\/p>\n
\u201cFunded by Iran, the Houthi thugs have fired missiles at US aircraft, and targeted our Troops and Allies,\u201d Trump wrote on his Truth social platform, adding that their \u201cpiracy, violence, and terrorism\u201d had cost \u201cbillions of dollars\u201d and put lives at risk.<\/p>\n
The Houthi-run health ministry said at least 31 people were killed and 101 others were injured in the strikes.<\/p>\n
The group \u2013 which began targeting shipping in response to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza \u2013 said its forces would respond to US strikes.<\/p>\n
The Houthis reported a series of explosions on Saturday evening in Sanaa and in the northern province of Saada \u2013 the rebels\u2019 stronghold on the border with Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n
The Iranian-backed rebel group, which considers Israel its enemy, controls Sanaa and the north-west of Yemen, but it is not the country\u2019s internationally-recognised government.<\/p>\n
Unverified images show plumes of black smoke over the area of Sanaa\u2019s airport \u2013 which includes a military facility.<\/p>\n
