Iceland\u2019s minister for children has resigned after admitting she had a child with a teenager more than 30 years ago.<\/p>\n

\u00c1sthildur L\u00f3a Th\u00f3rsd\u00f3ttir said in a media interview she had first started a relationship when the boy was 15 years old, and she was a 22-year-old counsellor at a religious group which he attended.<\/p>\n

She then gave birth to his child when he was 16 years old and she was 23.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been 36 years, a lot of things change in that time and I would definitely have dealt with these issues differently today,\u201d the 58-year-old told Icelandic media.<\/p>\n

Iceland\u2019s Prime Minister Kristr\u00fan Frostad\u00f3ttir told the press this was \u201ca serious matter\u201d, although she said she knew little more than \u201cthe average person\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a very personal matter [and] out of respect for the person concerned, I will not comment on the substance,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

According to Visir newspaper<\/a>, Frostad\u00f3ttir said she had only received confirmation of the story on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

She immediately summoned the Th\u00f3rsd\u00f3ttir to her office, where she resigned.<\/p>\n

Icelandic news agency RUV broke the story on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

Th\u00f3rsd\u00f3ttir revealed in an interview with them that she had met the father, who RUV name as Eir\u00edk \u00c1smundsson, while she was working at the religious group Tr\u00fa og l\u00edf (Religion and Life), which he had reportedly joined because of a difficult home life.<\/p>\n

He was 15 years old and she was 22 at the time of their meeting. Th\u00f3rsd\u00f3ttir gave birth to their son when they were both a year older.<\/p>\n

RUV report that the relationship was secret, but that \u00c1smundsson was present at his child\u2019s birth and spent the first year with him.<\/p>\n

However, the news agency writes this changed when Th\u00f3rsd\u00f3ttir met her current husband.<\/p>\n

They report they have seen documents \u00c1smundsson submitted to Iceland\u2019s justice ministry requesting access to his son, but that Th\u00f3rsd\u00f3ttir denied it, while also requesting \u2013 and receiving \u2013 child support payments from him over the following 18 years.<\/p>\n

A relative of \u00c1smundsson tried twice to contact the Icelandic prime minister about the relationship last week.<\/p>\n

Frostad\u00f3ttir said last night that when the woman revealed it involved a government minister she asked for more information, which led to the revelation and the resignation.<\/p>\n

In her TV interview with RUV last night, Th\u00f3rsd\u00f3ttir said she was upset that the woman had contacted the prime minister.<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand\u2026 what it looks like,\u201d she said, adding that it is \u201cvery difficult to get the right story across in the news today\u201d.<\/p>\n

While the age of consent in Iceland is 15, it is illegal to have sex with a person under the age of 18 if you are their teacher or mentor, if they are financially dependent on you, or work for you. The maximum sentence for this crime is three years in jail.<\/p>\n

Despite resigning from her ministerial job, Th\u00f3rsdottir said she had no plans to leave parliament.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
