Two people were injured on Tuesday in an attack on an Assyrian Christian celebration in northern Iraq\u2019s autonomous Kurdistan region, officials said.<\/p>\n
The region\u2019s Asayesh police force said it was investigating the attack in the city of Dohuk and could not yet determine whether it was a \u201cterrorist\u201d act.<\/p>\n
A Syrian suspect was arrested, a top government official told AFP on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n
Kurdish media said the attacker used a cleaver.<\/p>\n
According to a police source, the attack took place in a market and targeted the Akitu springtime celebrations observed by members of the Assyrian community to mark the first day of their calendar year.<\/p>\n
\u201cA 65-year-old woman was hit on the head\u201d and suffered a haemorrhage that did not require surgery, Dohuk medical authorities said, adding that her condition was \u201cstable\u201d.<\/p>\n
Another 25-year-old man suffered a minor scalp wound, the authorities added.<\/p>\n
Dohuk governor Ali Tatar told a press conference that \u201cour security forces arrested the suspect\u2026 the investigation is ongoing\u201d.<\/p>\n
