Podcasting in Kenya is not a space where you can easily make money. According to content creator Murugi Munyi, this is the gospel, who has been running her podcast The Messy In Between with co-host Lydia K for the past three years.
\nAccording to Spotify data, the podcast has consistently been one of the top 10 most listened to podcasts in Kenya in the last three years. However, Munyi says they have yet to make a significant amount of money.
\n“The podcast journey has been amazing. The space is really interesting because it’s still kind of a new niche in Kenya, and I feel like the monetization opportunities in Kenya are high, but at the same time, they’re few and far between. So that means it takes a lot of work and a lot more investment before you can see some returns.
\nStill, Murugi says she and her co-host aren’t focused on returns right now but rather on building the product first.
\n“We’ve done a few events (live podcast recordings), and they are expensive to put on. I think the profit from our first event was Sh10,000, so at least we were able to make some margins,” she adds.
\nLast year, Munyi revealed she made Sh10 million from content creation in 2023.
\nThat\u2019s Sh833,333 a month if she had a day job. Munyi quit her 9-5 job five years ago to become a full-time content creator.
\nShe said that although content creation is a lucrative venture, there are always dry months.
\n\u201cAs a content creator doesn\u2019t mean you are making money every month. There are dry months when companies and brands are not spending or don\u2019t have their budgets out yet,\u201d Munyi explained.<\/p>\n
Munyi added;
\n\u201cYou could make Sh200,000 this month and probably go dry the next, then make Sh1.3 million the month after, the next you do Sh400,000, and so on. The earnings you make are kind of cyclical.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
