The Togolese leader, Faure Gnassingb\u00e9, has been sworn in as \u201cPresident of the Council of Ministers\u201d \u2013 a new post which is the highest office in the government\u2019s executive branch and has no official term limits.<\/p>\n

This follows constitutional reform that ended presidential elections, and introduced a parliamentary system.<\/p>\n

The opposition said the change was in order to allow President Gnassingb\u00e9 to stay in power indefinitely.<\/p>\n

His family has ruled the country for 58 years \u2013 Faure Gnassingb\u00e9 took over in 2005 from his father, Gnassingb\u00e9 Eyad\u00e9ma, who had ruled for almost four decades.<\/p>\n

This latest change results from a new constitution approved by lawmakers last year, labelled by critics and opposition figures as an \u201cinstitutional coup d\u2019\u00e9tat\u201d.<\/p>\n

Gnassingb\u00e9\u2019s government had paused some of the changes following huge backlash, but has moved ahead with his new role.<\/p>\n

Togo\u2019s municipal elections in July will be the first under the new constitution, which has replaced the presidential system with a parliamentary one<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In theory, the role of president of the republic is now only an honorary title, but analysts say Gnassingb\u00e9\u2019s power is more entrenched than ever with his new post of council president.<\/p>\n

His party, the Union for the Republic, won a huge majority in last year\u2019s parliamentary election, taking of 108 out of 113 seats in the National Assembly.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
