Coeli<\/em> address from the window of the Apostolic Palace, urging an immediate end to the wars in Ukraine and Gaza while welcoming signs of hope in the form of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Addressing thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter\u2019s Square\u2014and millions more watching around the world\u2014the newly elected Pontiff echoed the impassioned peace pleas of his predecessor, Pope Francis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn today\u2019s dramatic context of a third world war fought piecemeal \u2026 I too appeal to the powerful of the world by repeating these ever-relevant words: never again war!\u201d he declared, drawing on one of Pope Francis\u2019s most memorable refrains.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Cry for Ukraine and Gaza<\/h3>\n<p>Reflecting on the lessons of history, Pope Leo recalled \u201cthe immense tragedy of the Second World War,\u201d which ended 80 years ago, on May 8, after claiming more than 60 million lives.<\/p>\n<p>Turning to current global conflicts, he spoke of his sorrow for Ukraine: \u201cI carry in my heart the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people,\u201d he said, calling for \u201cevery effort to be made to reach a true, just, and lasting peace as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay all prisoners be freed, and may the children be returned to their families,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The Pope then addressed the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. \u201cI am deeply pained by what is happening,\u201d he said. \u201cLet the fighting cease immediately, let humanitarian aid be provided to the exhausted civilian population, and may all hostages be released.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hope Amid Conflict<\/h3>\n<p>In contrast to the ongoing tragedies, Pope Leo XIV welcomed the recent announcement of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that, through the upcoming negotiations, a lasting agreement may soon be reached,\u201d he said, framing the development as a glimmer of hope in a troubled world.<\/p>\n<p>Still, he acknowledged the broader context of unrest: \u201cHow many other conflicts are there in the world?\u201d he asked, lamenting the widespread violence and instability affecting millions globally.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Prayer for Peace<\/h3>\n<p>Concluding his address, Pope Leo entrusted his \u201cheartfelt appeal\u201d to Mary, Queen of Peace, praying that \u201cshe may present it to the Lord Jesus and obtain for us the miracle of peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The address marked a
