US President Donald Trump has said he is \u201cnot happy\u201d with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, following Moscow\u2019s largest aerial attack yet on Ukraine.<\/p>\n
In a rare rebuke, Trump said: \u201cWhat the hell happened to him? He\u2019s killing a lot of people.\u201d He later called Putin \u201cabsolutely crazy\u201d.<\/p>\n
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier said Washington\u2019s \u201csilence\u201d over recent Russian attacks was encouraging Putin, urging \u201cstrong pressure\u201d \u2013 including tougher sanctions \u2013 on Moscow.<\/p>\n
At least 12 people were killed and dozens injured in Ukraine overnight Sunday after Russia fired 367 drones and missiles \u2013 the highest number in a single night since Putin launched a full-scale invasion in 2022.<\/p>\n
Air sirens warning of incoming drones and missiles sounded again in many regions of Ukraine early on Monday.<\/p>\n
At least three people, including a child, were injured in the north-eastern city of Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said.<\/p>\n
In the southern Zaporizhzhia region, two people were injured, said regional head Ivan Fedorov.<\/p>\n
In Russia, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said two Ukrainian drones heading towards the capital were destroyed by air defence units. No injuries were reported.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters in New Jersey late on Sunday, Trump said of Putin: \u201cI\u2019ve known him a long time, always gotten along with him, but he\u2019s sending rockets into cities and killing people, and I don\u2019t like it at all.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked about whether he was considering increasing US sanctions on Russia, Trump replied: \u201cAbsolutely.\u201d The US president has repeatedly threatened to do this before \u2013 but is yet to implement any restrictions against Moscow.<\/p>\n
Shortly afterwards, Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social that Putin \u201chas gone absolutely crazy\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve always said that he wants all of Ukraine, not just a piece of it, and maybe that\u2019s proving to be right, but if he does, it will lead to the downfall of Russia!\u201d<\/p>\n
But the US president also had strong words for Zelensky, saying that he \u201cis doing his country no favours by talking the way he does\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cEverything out of his mouth causes problems, I don\u2019t like it, and it better stop,\u201d Trump wrote of Zelensky.<\/p>\n
Despite Kyiv\u2019s European allies preparing further sanctions for Russia, the US has said it will either continue trying to broker these peace talks, or \u201cwalk away\u201d if progress does not follow.<\/p>\n
Last week, Trump and Putin had a two-hour phone call to discuss a US-proposed ceasefire deal to halt the fighting.<\/p>\n
The US president said he believed the call had gone \u201cvery well\u201d, adding that Russia and Ukraine would \u201cimmediately start\u201d negotiations toward a ceasefire and \u201can end to the war\u201d.<\/p>\n
Ukraine has publicly agreed to a 30-day ceasefire.<\/p>\n
Putin has only said Russia will work with Ukraine to craft a \u201cmemorandum\u201d on a \u201cpossible future peace\u201d \u2013 a move described by Kyiv and its European allies as delaying tactics.<\/p>\n
The first direct Ukrainian-Russian talks since 2022 were held on 16 May in Istanbul, Turkey.<\/p>\n
Aside from a major prisoner of war swap last week, there was little or no progress on bringing a pause in fighting closer.<\/p>\n
Russia currently controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory. This includes Crimea \u2013 Ukraine\u2019s southern peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
