{"id":116136,"date":"2025-06-07T09:03:33","date_gmt":"2025-06-07T09:03:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2025\/06\/07\/atwoli-disowns-affordable-housing-regulations-accuses-ps-hinga-of-misleading-public\/"},"modified":"2025-06-07T09:03:33","modified_gmt":"2025-06-07T09:03:33","slug":"atwoli-disowns-affordable-housing-regulations-accuses-ps-hinga-of-misleading-public","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/atwoli-disowns-affordable-housing-regulations-accuses-ps-hinga-of-misleading-public\/","title":{"rendered":"Atwoli Disowns Affordable Housing Regulations, Accuses PS Hinga of Misleading Public"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI,<strong> Kenya \u2013 June 6,<\/strong> \u2013 The Central Organization of Trade Unions, Kenya, has strongly denied claims by Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga that it was involved in drafting the Affordable Housing Regulations.<\/p>\n<p>In a sharply worded statement issued Friday, COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli dismissed Hinga\u2019s remarks as false and misleading, warning that workers\u2019 funds risk being misused under the guise of the housing levy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt no point did the Executive Board of COTU, which is the legally mandated organ responsible for such decisions, sit to deliberate or resolve to support the said regulations,\u201d Atwoli said, challenging PS Hinga to produce minutes or official communication showing COTU\u2019s endorsement.<\/p>\n<p>He further clarified that COTU\u2019s representative on the Affordable Housing Fund Board, Bro. Ernest Nadome, had no authority to speak or commit the union to the regulations without board approval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe PS should be informed that no individual is authorized to commit the organization to a matter of such magnitude without the express approval of the Executive Board,\u201d Atwoli stated.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that using the housing levy to fund infrastructure already covered in the national budget\u2014such as roads and dams\u2014was not only dishonest but a betrayal of workers\u2019 trust.<\/p>\n<p>COTU is now calling on President William Ruto to urgently intervene and ensure the housing levy is used strictly for providing decent and affordable housing to Kenyans.<\/p>\n<p>Atwoli reaffirmed that the union remains opposed to the current trajectory of the housing programme, citing a lack of proper consultation and the risk of diverting workers\u2019 funds to unrelated projects.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya \u2013 June 6, \u2013 The Central Organization of Trade Unions, Kenya, has strongly denied claims by Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga that it was involved in drafting the Affordable Housing Regulations.
