{"id":117447,"date":"2025-07-02T05:03:31","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T05:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2025\/07\/02\/trump-threatens-japan-with-tariff-up-to-35-as-deadline-looms\/"},"modified":"2025-07-02T05:03:31","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T05:03:31","slug":"trump-threatens-japan-with-tariff-up-to-35-as-deadline-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/trump-threatens-japan-with-tariff-up-to-35-as-deadline-looms\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump threatens Japan with tariff up to 35% as deadline looms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a \u201c30% or 35%\u201d tariff on Japan if a deal between the two countries is not reached before a deadline next week.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That would be well above the 24% tariff Japan was hit with as part of Trump\u2019s so-called \u201cLiberation Day\u201d on 2 April, when he announced steep import duties on countries around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The tariffs on most trading partners were later lowered to 10% for 90 days to give them time to negotiate deals with Washington.<\/p>\n<p>That pause is due to expire on 9 July and Trump has said he is not thinking of extending the deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also continued to cast doubt that an agreement could be reached with Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve dealt with Japan. I\u2019m not sure we\u2019re going to make a deal. I doubt it,\u201d he told reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Like many other countries, most of Japan\u2019s exports to the US currently face a 10% levy. There is also a 25% import tax on Japanese vehicles and parts, while steel and aluminium are subject to a 50% tariff.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Tuesday Japan\u2019s chief cabinet secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said he would not make concessions that could hurt his country\u2019s farmers to strike an agreement with Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The comments came after Trump criticised countries over their trade policies towards the US, focussing on Japanese rice imports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo show people how spoiled Countries have become with respect to the United States of America, and I have great respect for Japan, they won\u2019t take our RICE, and yet they have a massive rice shortage,\u201d he wrote on his Truth Social platform.<\/p>\n<p>Trump originally said he would sign 90 trade agreements during the pause on the new tariffs but since then only the UK has struck a deal with the US.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a \u201c30% or 35%\u201d tariff on Japan if a deal between the two countries is not reached before a deadline next week.
