{"id":118658,"date":"2025-07-23T16:03:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T16:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2025\/07\/23\/poor-debt-recovery-inefficiencies-sinking-nairobi-water-despite-revenue-increase\/"},"modified":"2025-07-23T16:03:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T16:03:12","slug":"poor-debt-recovery-inefficiencies-sinking-nairobi-water-despite-revenue-increase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/poor-debt-recovery-inefficiencies-sinking-nairobi-water-despite-revenue-increase\/","title":{"rendered":"Poor debt recovery, inefficiencies sinking Nairobi Water despite revenue increase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 23 \u2013 Nairobi City Water\u2019s financial struggles are being compounded by inefficiencies, outdated tariffs, and unaccounted-for infrastructure, according to an Auditor General\u2019s report presented to the Senate Public Investment Committee.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Governor Johnson Sakaja revealed that 51 per cent of Nairobi\u2019s water<strong> <\/strong>is classified as non-revenue water, either lost through leakages or consumed without billing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are now prioritizing a revenue monitoring unit, improved meter reading, and a credit control team to authenticate debts, especially those over 480 days,\u201d Sakaja told senators on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The Governor also pointed to systemic issues such as outdated tariffs and unbooked water assets, saying the company maintains major dams and networks that were never transferred to its books as required by the Water Act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re pursuing a cost-reflective tariff through WASREB because the current regime does not match the cost of service delivery,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/2025\/07\/nairobi-water-blames-budget-starved-prisons-schools-amid-soaring-debt\/\">Nairobi Water blames budget-starved prisons, schools amid soaring debt<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>While the company\u2019s revenues have grown from Sh8 billion to nearly Sh12 billion in the past year, the Auditor General warned that poor debt recovery, coupled with inefficiencies, has left the utility in a negative working capital position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven reorganizing these assets will not address the liquidity position.
