WASHINGTON, Sept 11 \u2013 President Donald Trump\u00a0announced that he will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously to conservative activist\u00a0Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated in Utah on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Trump\u00a0made the announcement during remarks at the Pentagon to\u00a0commemorate the 9\/11 attacks.<\/p>\n
Kirk, a prominent conservative activist,\u00a0was shot\u00a0during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Trump later that day announced his death.<\/p>\n
\u201cCharlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions and millions of people,\u201d Trump said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
We miss him greatly, yet I have no doubt that Charlie\u2019s voice and courage put into the hearts of countless people, especially young people, will live on,\u201d the president continued.<\/p>\n
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award in the U.S. Trump said that the day of that ceremony would be announced soon, adding he thought it would surely draw a big crowd.<\/p>\n
Trump told reporters with him at the Pentagon that he plans to speak with Kirk\u2019s family on Thursday afternoon. Kirk is\u00a0survived by his wife Erika and two young children.<\/p>\n
A\u00a0manhunt for Kirk\u2019s killer\u00a0is underway. <\/p>\n
