LONDON \u2013 British Ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson was sacked on Thursday following revelations about his friendship with convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n
The recently released Epstein\u2019s 50th \u201cbirthday book\u201d contains a letter from Mandelson, who called Epstein his \u201cbest pal\u201d.<\/p>\n
Epstein, who had extensive connections with US political and business elites, was arrested on sex crime charges and died in prison in August 2019. His death was officially ruled a suicide.<\/p>\n
Details revealed by the media show that Mandelson told Epstein to \u201cfight for early release\u201d in their email correspondence when Epstein faced charges over soliciting a minor.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can still barely understand it. It just could not happen in Britain,\u201d Mandelson wrote to Epstein in his email.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe emails show that the depth and extent of Peter Mandelson\u2019s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein is materially different from that known at the time of his appointment,\u201d said Britain\u2019s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn particular, Peter Mandelson\u2019s suggestion that Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s first conviction was wrongful and should be challenged is new information.
