{"id":121429,"date":"2025-09-15T06:10:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T06:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2025\/09\/15\/kenya-and-tanzania-mull-joint-board-to-manage-mara-river\/"},"modified":"2025-09-15T06:10:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T06:10:07","slug":"kenya-and-tanzania-mull-joint-board-to-manage-mara-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/kenya-and-tanzania-mull-joint-board-to-manage-mara-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya and Tanzania mull joint board to manage Mara river"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BUTIAMA, Tanzania \u2013 A call has been made for the creation of a joint Kenya-Tanzania board to oversee the sustainable management of the Mara River, a crucial trans-boundary water source shared by the two nations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tanzania\u2019s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water Mwajuma Waziri, said the time has come for a coordinated and collaborative approach to protecting the Mara River basin.<\/p>\n<p>She proposed the establishment of a trans-boundary management body, drawing membership from both countries and key institutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis board should be jointly managed by Mwalimu Nyerere University of Agriculture and Technology and Kenya\u2019s Maasai Mara University, working closely with the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC),\u201d Eng. Waziri said on Sunday during the opening of the 14th Mara Day Scientific Conference in Butiama, Mara Region.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s conference is themed \u201cProtect Mara River: Preserve Life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She urged the two universities to draft a joint concept paper outlining strategies to address the river\u2019s environmental threats.<\/p>\n<p>She emphasized that stronger regional coordination could unlock international funding for sustainable water resource management in the basin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conservation of River Mara requires a joint effort and innovative ideas that can drive real change,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Eng. Waziri also announced that next year\u2019s Mara Day celebrations will be hosted in Kenya and should be jointly organized by the proposed trans-boundary committee.<\/p>\n<p>LVBC Executive Secretary, Dr. Masinde Bwire, said the decision to host the scientific forum in Butiama was deliberate, in honor of Tanzania\u2019s founding President, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is deeply symbolic to meet here in Butiama,\u201d said Dr. Bwire. \u201cMwalimu Nyerere was not only Tanzania\u2019s first President but also a visionary who believed in using education to transform society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He noted that since the inception of Mara Day celebrations in 2012, the region has recorded notable progress in protecting the Mara River ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>The scientific conference, he added, has become a vital platform for sharing new research and solutions by researchers, scientists and experts to the challenges facing the basin.<\/p>\n<p>The celebrations will continue on Monday, with both Kenyan and Tanzanian officials expected to join local residents at Mwenge Grounds in Butiama District, in a show of cross-border unity for river conservation.<\/p>\n<p>East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) member David Ole Sankok, who also attended the conference, encouraged researchers to further explore the region\u2019s potential in the blue economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEast Africa has 38 freshwater lakes, that\u2019s a huge opportunity,\u201d said Sankok. \u201cLet\u2019s use science to add value and improve the lives of our people.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BUTIAMA, Tanzania \u2013 A call has been made for the creation of a joint Kenya-Tanzania board to oversee the sustainable management of the Mara River, a crucial trans-boundary water source shared by the two nations.
