NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 12 \u2013 The United States Treasury has sanctioned Crown Bus Services and two Kenyans for financing the Al Shabaab militia. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Department of the Treasury\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced Monday the sanctions would target sixteen entities red-flagged over money laundering and funding of the terrorist group.<\/p>\n

OFAC named Kenya-based\u00a0Faysal Yusuf Dini\u00a0(Dini), working closely with Mohamed Jumale Ali Awale\u00a0(Awale), as an al-Shabaab financial facilitator leveraging Haleel Group\u00a0<\/strong>and some of its leadership to transfer funds on behalf of al-Shabaab.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sixteen, OFAC said, are part of an expansive business network spanning the Horn of Africa, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Cyprus that raises and launders funds for the al-Qa\u2019ida-affiliated terrorist formation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIndividuals within this network include influential businesspeople in the region that lend financial backing to al-Shabaab, a terrorist group responsible for some of the worst terrorist attacks in East Africa\u2019s modern history,\u201d OFAC stated.<\/p>\n

The designation of the individuals and entities under Executive Order (E.O.) 13224, as amended, seeks to cut off financial flow to the terror organization.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States is committed to working with regional partners to root out terror financing networks and the entities they abuse to raise and move funds,\u201d Brian Nelson, Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, said. <\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s action is part of a multifaceted effort by Treasury to support the Somali government\u2019s economic offensive against al-Shabaab\u2014one of three pillars in their campaign to degrade this deadly terrorist group.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

USD100 million raised annualy <\/h2>\n

US Treasury\u2019s projections put Al-Shabaab annual revenue, largely from extortion and financial support from businesspeople, at USD100 million.<\/p>\n

The proceeds party finances other al-Qa\u2019ida-supported groups worldwide.<\/p>\n

Other individuals and entities named<\/a> include:<\/p>\n

1. Dubai-based\u00a0Haleel Commodities L.L.C.<\/strong>, also known as\u00a0<\/strong>Haleel Group,\u00a0<\/strong>which OFAC identified as a key financial facilitator for al-Shabaab.<\/p>\n

2. UAE-based\u00a0Qemat Al Najah General Trading\u00a0<\/strong>said to help\u00a0manage and transfer funds for al-Shabaab in connection with Haleel Group.<\/p>\n

3. Hassan Abdirahman Mahamed<\/strong>, a Finland-based Somali citizen, uses money transfer and hawala businesses to support al-Shabaab\u2019s money laundering operations linked to the network of Haleel Group and Qemat Al Najah General Trading.<\/p>\n

4. UAE-based\u00a0Mohamed Artan Robel<\/strong>: another member of this money laundering network supporting al-Shabaab through the Haleel Group and Qemat Al Najah General Trading.\u00a0<\/p>\n

5. Abdikarin Farah Mohamed<\/strong>: a Somalia-based key member of this money laundering network.\u00a0<\/p>\n

6. Farhan Hussein Hayder\u00a0<\/strong>(Hayder<\/strong>): directs and manages Haleel Group\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>branches in Kenya, Uganda, Cyprus, and the UAE, and supports al-Shabaab by generating funds for the group through these businesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n

7. Abdulkadir Omar Abdullahi\u00a0<\/strong>(Abdullahi<\/strong>): associated with Haleel Group\u2019s Uganda branch as its director, along with\u00a0Omar Sheikh Ali Hilowle\u00a0<\/strong>(Hilowle<\/strong>) and Hayder.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
