{"id":122767,"date":"2025-10-09T05:08:01","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T05:08:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2025\/10\/09\/somalia-to-increase-swahili-teaching-to-boost-east-african-ties\/"},"modified":"2025-10-09T05:08:01","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T05:08:01","slug":"somalia-to-increase-swahili-teaching-to-boost-east-african-ties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/somalia-to-increase-swahili-teaching-to-boost-east-african-ties\/","title":{"rendered":"Somalia to increase Swahili teaching to boost East African ties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Somalia is to introduce Swahili, the lingua franca of East Africa, to its national curriculum, the president has announced.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>English is used as the language of instruction for most subjects nationwide at secondary schools, with Arabic the only other compulsory second language taught at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>But President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Swahili should also be taught at schools and universities, making the declaration at a summit of the East African Community (EAC) that is taking place in the capital, Mogadishu.<\/p>\n<p>Somalia officially joined the eight-nation regional trading bloc last year with the intention of boosting economic growth following three decades of war.<\/p>\n<p>With more than 200 million speakers, Swahili is one of the world\u2019s 10 most widely spoken languages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe country\u2019s universities, especially the Somali National University, should focus more on developing the Swahili language, which is the language of East Africa,\u201d President Mohamud said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdopting Swahili is important for our integration into the region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Education Minister Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir added that the government had great ambitions for the adoption of Swahili nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to see Swahili become a language of communication, trade and learning \u2013 even replacing English during our next conference,\u201d he said at the EAC gathering.<\/p>\n<p>Swahili dialects are already spoken along Somalia\u2019s southern coast and the language has been used more widely around the country in recent years \u2013 one of the consequences of the civil war that erupted in 1991 and brought decades of instability and more recently jihadist violence.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of people have sought refuge over the border in Kenya, many going on to learn how to speak Swahili \u2013 especially those who have gone through the Kenyan education system.<\/p>\n<p>As the situation in Somalia has somewhat stabilised in recent years, some of these fluent Swahili speakers have returned or have links back home, while the presence of African Union troops has also seen the language grow.<\/p>\n<p>These soldiers, many from East African nations, have been deployed since 2007 with Swahili often their common language.<\/p>\n<p>Until 2016, Arabic was the language of instruction in Somalia at junior schools and English at secondary and tertiary levels.<\/p>\n<p>Now the primary school national curriculum is taught in Somali with the curriculum remaining in English for higher education \u2013 and Arabic used at madrassas, or Islamic schools.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Somalia is to introduce Swahili, the lingua franca of East Africa, to its national curriculum, the president has announced.
