{"id":124957,"date":"2025-11-19T08:05:17","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T08:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2025\/11\/19\/china-rejects-japans-bid-for-un-security-council-seat-citing-provocative-taiwan-remarks\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T08:05:17","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T08:05:17","slug":"china-rejects-japans-bid-for-un-security-council-seat-citing-provocative-taiwan-remarks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/china-rejects-japans-bid-for-un-security-council-seat-citing-provocative-taiwan-remarks\/","title":{"rendered":"China rejects Japan\u2019s bid for UN Security Council seat citing provocative Taiwan remarks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BEIJING, China, Nov 19 \u2014 China, a permanent member of the Security Council, on Tuesday pushed back against Japan\u2019s bid for a permanent seat, saying Japan\u2019s recent comments on Taiwan show it is \u201ctotally unqualified\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Japan \u201cis totally unqualified to seek a permanent seat on the Security Council,\u201d Fu Cong, China\u2019s permanent representative to the United Nations, said at the UN General Assembly\u2019s annual debate on Security Council reform.<\/p>\n<p>Fu noted that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently made a \u201cbrazen, provocative\u201d statement on Taiwan at the Diet, claiming that a \u201cTaiwan contingency\u201d could be a \u201csurvival-threatening situation\u201d for Japan.<\/p>\n<p>She implied that Japan may invoke the so-called right to collective self-defense to interfere militarily in the Taiwan Strait.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSanae Takaichi\u2019s remarks on Taiwan are extremely erroneous and dangerous. They constitute a gross interference in China\u2019s internal affairs and a serious breach of the one-China principle and the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan,\u201d Fu said.<\/p>\n<p>They are an affront to international justice, damage the post-war international order, trample on the basic norms of international relations, and represent a blatant departure from Japan\u2019s commitment to peaceful development, the Chinese envoy added.<\/p>\n<p>In his response to Japan, Fu questioned the intention behind recent remarks by Takaichi. \u201cWhat is her true intention? Is Japan going to repeat its past mistakes of militarism?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Given these positions, Fu asked whether \u201cthe international community can trust Japan\u2019s professed commitment to peaceful development,\u201d and whether Japan can be relied upon to \u201cuphold fairness and justice\u201d or \u201cshoulder the responsibility of maintaining international peace and security\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur message to Japan is clear,\u201d Fu said. \u201cJapan should immediately stop interfering in China\u2019s internal affairs, retract its wrongful, proactive remarks and actions, and refrain from playing with fire on the Taiwan question.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Firm response\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>He said any attempt by Japan to intervene militarily would have consequences. \u201cIf Japan dares to attempt an armed intervention in the cross-Strait situation, it would be an act of aggression and would definitely be met with a firm response from China,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will exercise our right to self-defence under the UN Charter and international law and resolutely defend China\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic People\u2019s Republic of Korea also raised concerns about Japan\u2019s bid for a permanent seat.<\/p>\n<p>Kim Song, permanent representative of the DPRK to the United Nations, said his delegation \u201cmaintains its consistent position that Japan must never be allowed to obtain a permanent seat on the Security Council.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kim said that \u201cinstead of apologizing for and compensating these past crimes against humanity, Japan is now revising its Peace Constitution and moving toward becoming a military power.\u201d He said that \u201cthe attempt by such a country to secure a permanent seat on the Security Council constitutes an insult to the UN Charter and an affront to international justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 15-member Security Council is the only UN body whose decisions are legally binding on all member states.
