NAIROBI, Kenya Nov 21 \u2014 India\u2019s Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Johannesburg on Friday to attend the G20 Leaders\u2019 Summit being held under South Africa\u2019s Presidency \u2014 the first time the summit is taking place on African soil.<\/p>\n
Modi touched down at Waterkloof Air Force Base in Gauteng, where he received a traditional South African welcome, complete with cultural songs and dances.<\/p>\n
The African Union became a permanent member of the G20 during India\u2019s presidency in 2023, making this year\u2019s summit particularly symbolic for the continent.<\/p>\n
Ahead of his departure, Modi posted on social media that he looked forward to contributing India\u2019s perspective under the guiding vision of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam<\/em> \u2014 \u201cOne Earth, One Family, One Future\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cVarious global issues will be discussed there. Will be meeting various world leaders during the Summit,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n During the summit, Modi is expected to hold bilateral talks with several world leaders and participate in the 6th IBSA (India\u2013Brazil\u2013South Africa) Summit on the sidelines.<\/p>\n The theme of this year\u2019s G20 \u2014 \u201cSolidarity, Equality and Sustainability\u201d<\/em> \u2014 builds on outcomes from previous summits in New Delhi and Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n Modi is scheduled to address all three official sessions of the summit, which will focus on:<\/p>\n Inclusive and sustainable economic growth<\/strong>, including trade, financing for development and debt challenges<\/p>\n A resilient world<\/strong>, covering disaster risk reduction, climate change, just energy transitions and food systems<\/p>\n A fair and just future<\/strong>, including critical minerals, decent work and artificial intelligence<\/p>\n Modi also expressed anticipation for engaging with South Africa\u2019s Indian diaspora, one of the largest outside India.<\/p>\n This is the fourth consecutive G20 summit hosted in the Global South.
