{"id":125209,"date":"2025-11-23T04:07:45","date_gmt":"2025-11-23T04:07:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2025\/11\/23\/un-climate-talks-fail-to-secure-new-fossil-fuel-promises\/"},"modified":"2025-11-23T04:07:45","modified_gmt":"2025-11-23T04:07:45","slug":"un-climate-talks-fail-to-secure-new-fossil-fuel-promises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/un-climate-talks-fail-to-secure-new-fossil-fuel-promises\/","title":{"rendered":"UN climate talks fail to secure new fossil fuel promises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BEL\u00c9M, Nov 23 \u2013 Following bitter rows, the UN climate summit COP30 in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil has ended with a deal that contains no direct reference to the fossil fuels that are heating up the planet.<\/p>\n<p>It is a frustrating end for more than 80 countries including the UK and EU that wanted the meeting to commit the world to stop using using oil, coal and gas at a faster pace.<\/p>\n<p>But oil-producing nations held the line that they should be allowed to use their fossil fuel resources to grow their economies.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting takes place as the UN says it fears global efforts to limit global temperature rise to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels have failed.<\/p>\n<p>A representative for Colombia furiously criticised the COP presidency for not allowing countries to object to the deal in the final meeting on Saturday, known as a plenary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColombia believes that we have sufficient scientific evidence saying that more than 75% of the global greenhouse gas emissions come from fossil fuels,\u201d Daniela Dur\u00e1n Gonz\u00e1lez, Colombian Climate Delegate, told BBC News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we do believe it\u2019s time that the Convention on Climate Change starts talking about that reality,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The final deal, called the Mutir\u00e3o, calls on countries to \u201cvoluntarily\u201d accelerate their action to reduce their use of fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, the US did not send a delegation after President Donald Trump said the country will leave the landmark Paris treaty that committed countries to act on climate change in 2015. He has branded climate change \u201ca con\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Veteran negotiator and former Germany climate envoy Jennifer Morgan told the BBC that the US absence was a \u201chole\u201d in the negotiations. Often the US has supported blocs like the EU and UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a 12-hour negotiation overnight, when you have oil-producing countries pushing back hard, to not have someone counteracting on that, it certainly was hard,\u201d she said<\/p>\n<p>But for many countries, the fact that the talks did not collapse or roll back on past climate agreements is a relief.<\/p>\n<p>Antigua and Barbuda Climate Ambassador Ruleta Thomas commented: \u201cWe are happy that there is a process that continues to function [\u2026] where every country can be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the final meeting, a representative for Saudi Arabia said: \u201cEach state must be allowed to build its own path, based on its respective circumstances and economies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like many other leading oil-producing nations, the country has argued it should be allowed to exploit its fossil fuel reserves as others have done in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The two weeks of talks were at times chaotic. Toilets ran out of water, torrential thunderstorms flooded the venue, and delegates struggled to cope in hot, humid rooms.<\/p>\n<p>The COP\u2019s around 50,000 registered delegates were evacuated twice. A group of about 150 protestors broke into the venue, breaching security lines, and carrying placards reading \u201cour forests are not for sale\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday a large fire broke out, scorching a hole into the roof and forcing participants to rush outside.<\/p>\n<p>Brazilian President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva chose the city of Bel\u00e9m to put the world\u2019s attention on the Amazon rainforest and to bring a rush of finance to the city.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BEL\u00c9M, Nov 23 \u2013 Following bitter rows, the UN climate summit COP30 in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil has ended with a deal that contains no direct reference to the fossil fuels that are heating up the planet.
