KYIV\/WASHINGTON\/MOSCOW \u2013 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday that talks with US representatives on a peace plan for Ukraine have been \u201cconstructive\u201d but \u201cnot easy\u201d, as he is scheduled to meet European leaders this week.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe American representatives know the basic Ukrainian positions,\u201d Zelensky said in his nightly video address. \u201cThe conversation was constructive, although not easy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Intensive diplomatic efforts have been underway between the relevant parties over the past few days.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, US and Ukrainian delegations concluded three-day talks in Miami, Florida, focusing on territorial issues and US security guarantees for Ukraine, US online media outlet Axios reported.<\/p>\n
Sources told Axios that the discussion on territory was \u201cdifficult\u201d, as Kyiv has rejected Russia\u2019s key demand to withdraw troops from parts of the Donbass that Ukraine continues to occupy, while the United States was trying to develop new ideas to bridge the gap. Another major topic was US security guarantees for Kiev, on which the parties made \u201csignificant progress\u201d, the report added.<\/p>\n
At the end of the Miami talks, Zelensky held a phone call with Trump\u2019s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump\u2019s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Describing the call as \u201clong and substantive\u201d, Zelensky said on X that Ukraine remains committed to working with the United States \u201cin good faith\u201d to \u201cgenuinely achieve peace\u201d.<\/p>\n
Zelensky is expected to meet British, French and German leaders in London on Monday, with further talks planned in Brussels.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Trump claimed on Sunday that Zelensky \u201cisn\u2019t ready\u201d to sign off on a US-authored peace proposal aimed at ending the crisis.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m a little bit disappointed that President Zelensky hasn\u2019t yet read the proposal, that was as of a few hours ago. His people love it, but he hasn\u2019t,\u201d Trump told reporters before taking part in the Kennedy Center Honors event.<\/p>\n
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that outstanding issues remain regarding the Ukraine peace plan after his meeting with US envoys at the Kremlin last week.<\/p>\n
Moreover, Russia on Sunday welcomed the Trump administration\u2019s new national security strategy.<\/p>\n
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday that the adjustments made to the new US National Security Strategy are \u201clargely consistent with our vision\u201d, RIA Novosti reported.<\/p>\n
Peskov said the new US national security strategy leaves room for hope that joint efforts might result in a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict. \u201cThere are phrases opposing confrontation and those favoring dialogue, building good relations. This is what Putin is talking about. This is gratifying, of course,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The White House on Friday released a new national security strategy that paints European allies as weak and aims to reassert America\u2019s dominance in the Western Hemisphere.<\/p>\n
