{"id":126453,"date":"2025-12-10T16:05:41","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T16:05:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/stop-treating-youth-like-phone-fixers-winnie-odinga-tells-leaders\/"},"modified":"2025-12-10T16:05:41","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T16:05:41","slug":"stop-treating-youth-like-phone-fixers-winnie-odinga-tells-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/stop-treating-youth-like-phone-fixers-winnie-odinga-tells-leaders\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cStop treating youth like phone fixers,\u201d Winnie Odinga tells leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 10 \u2013 Winnie Odinga has called on leaders and older generations to stop reducing young people to \u201cphone fixers\u201d and instead give them real space to shape Kenya\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during an event on Wednesday honoring her father the late Raila Odinga\u2019s legacy on International Human Rights Day, Winnie said Kenyan youth feel ignored, undervalued and boxed into stereotypes that limit their potential.<\/p>\n<p>She said young people are exposed to a global world where they are told they are smart, capable and worthy yet at home they are treated as if their only skill is repairing gadgets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have a problem with your phone, you always ask a young person to fix it. <\/p>\n<p>They do it in one minute, but that is not all they are good for. They need more space,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Winnie described Kenya as facing a \u201ccrisis of generations\u201d, where older leaders keep shifting the goalposts whenever the youth try to step forward. <\/p>\n<p>She said this constant dismissal is pushing many young people to withdraw from politics and public life.<\/p>\n<p>She noted that while some youth take to the streets to demand inclusion, many others have simply \u201cchecked out\u201d because they feel the system is not fair and their voices don\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese young people are angry. They are not trying to burn down the house \u2014 they just want to be listened to,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Winnie also highlighted double standards that young women face, saying society calls them \u201cdisrespectful\u201d for asking tough questions while praising men for the same behavior.<\/p>\n<p>She urged leaders to embrace equality, humor and openness, saying change does not always have to come through conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Winnie praised her father for teaching that leadership is not about titles but showing up, listening, and fighting for what is right.<\/p>\n<p>She called on Kenyans to apply those lessons today and to build a country where all generations sit at the same table and help design the future together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBullets don\u2019t bring smiles. We are all human, all equal.
