{"id":127534,"date":"2025-12-29T09:08:55","date_gmt":"2025-12-29T09:08:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/single-sovereign-state-eac-denounces-israels-recognition-of-somaliland\/"},"modified":"2025-12-29T09:08:55","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T09:08:55","slug":"single-sovereign-state-eac-denounces-israels-recognition-of-somaliland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/single-sovereign-state-eac-denounces-israels-recognition-of-somaliland\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Single sovereign state\u2019: EAC denounces Israel\u2019s recognition of Somaliland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 29 \u2014 The East African Community (EAC) has rejected Israel\u2019s recognition of Somaliland, reaffirming its commitment to the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia amid rising regional tensions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued by the EAC Secretariat in Arusha, the regional bloc aligned itself with the African Union\u2019s foundational principles, stressing that Somalia\u2019s borders, as inherited at independence, remain inviolable under the EAC Treaty framework.<\/p>\n<p>The position follows Israel\u2019s formal recognition of Somaliland, a self-declared breakaway region yet to gain recognition by the African Union and the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe East African Community recognises the Federal Republic of Somalia as a single sovereign state under the authority of its government,\u201d the EAC said, urging all stakeholders to respect established regional and international legal frameworks governing sovereignty and territorial integrity.<\/p>\n<p>The EAC\u2019s stance mirrors positions taken by other regional bodies. <\/p>\n<p>On December 28, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) reaffirmed its support for Somalia\u2019s sovereignty, dismissing unilateral recognitions as violations of the UN Charter, the AU Constitutive Act, and IGAD agreements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnilateral recognitions undermine the collaborative objectives of regional and international organisations,\u201d IGAD said, calling for strengthened institutional capacity and dialogue-based conflict resolution across the Horn of Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the African Union (AU) condemned attempts to recognise Somaliland, with AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf warning that such moves threaten peace and stability across the continent.<\/p>\n<p>Somaliland\u2019s leadership hailed Israel\u2019s recognition, which includes plans for expanded cooperation in agriculture, health, and technology, as \u201ca historic moment\u201d and a step toward joining the Abraham Accords.<\/p>\n<p>Somalia\u2019s government, however, rejected the move outright.
