\u00a0US President Donald Trump on Sunday night urged Venezuelan acting president Delcy Rodriguez to grant the United States \u201ctotal access,\u201d especially to Venezuela\u2019s oil resources.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need total access. We need access to the oil and to other things in their country that allow us to rebuild their country,\u201d Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.<\/p>\n
Trump said that he had not spoken directly with Rodriguez, but would do so \u201cat the right time.\u201d Rodriguez, vice president under Nicolas Maduro, assumed the role of acting president after Maduro was flown out of Venezuela following US military attacks.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Trump claimed that the United States was \u201cin charge\u201d of Venezuela and \u201cdealing with the people that just got sworn in.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t ask me who\u2019s in charge, because I\u2019ll give you an answer, and it\u2019ll be very controversial,\u201d Trump said. \u201cIt means we\u2019re in charge. We\u2019re in charge.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump reiterated comments made earlier Sunday in a phone interview with The Atlantic, warning that Rodriguez would face a fate worse than that of Maduro if she failed to \u201cdo the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe will face a situation probably worse than Maduro, because, you know, Maduro gave up immediately,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
Maduro is expected to appear in court in New York on Monday.<\/p>\n
Hours after Maduro\u2019s capture on Saturday morning, Trump said that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a phone call with Rodriguez and that the White House was working with her.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe (Rodriguez) is essentially willing to do what we believe is necessary to make Venezuela great again,\u201d Trump told reporters, noting that she had been \u201cpicked by Maduro.\u201d<\/p>\n
As Trump made these remarks, Rodriguez demanded the immediate release of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, during a session of the National Defense Council broadcast on state television channel VTV, calling Maduro \u201cthe only president of Venezuela.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rodriguez said Venezuela\u2019s territorial integrity had been \u201csavagely attacked\u201d during US strikes on Caracas and other parts of the country carried out to capture Maduro.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
