Their hands were not restrained, allowing Maduro to shake hands with his attorney.<\/p>\n<p>Maduro pleaded not guilty, telling the judge:\u00a0\u201cI am a decent man, the President of my country\u2026 I was captured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 25-page indictment includes multiple drug trafficking and weapons-related charges, among them allegations of a \u201cnarco-terrorism conspiracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The case is being overseen by 92-year-old District Judge Alvin Hellerstein<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my job to assure this is a fair trial, that\u2019s my job and that\u2019s what I intend,\u201d Judge Hellerstein said.<\/p>\n<p>Federal court records show Maduro has retained attorney Barry Joel Pollack, best known for representing WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.<\/p>\n<p>Following the court appearance, Maduro and Flores are expected to be returned to custody, with bail considered unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Dramatic images showed the pair being transferred under heavy armed guard to the Manhattan courthouse.
