{"id":128028,"date":"2026-01-07T04:08:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T04:08:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/us-discussing-options-to-acquire-greenland-including-use-of-military-says-white-house\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T04:08:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T04:08:07","slug":"us-discussing-options-to-acquire-greenland-including-use-of-military-says-white-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/us-discussing-options-to-acquire-greenland-including-use-of-military-says-white-house\/","title":{"rendered":"US discussing options to acquire Greenland, including use of military, says White House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US President Donald Trump has been discussing \u201ca range of options\u201d to acquire Greenland, including use of the military, the White House said.<\/p>\n<p>The White House told the BBC that acquiring Greenland \u2013 a semi-autonomous region of fellow Nato member Denmark \u2013 was a \u201cnational security priority\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The statement came hours after European leaders issued a joint statement rallying behind Denmark, which has been pushing back against Trump\u2019s ambitions for the Arctic island.<\/p>\n<p>Trump repeated over the weekend that the US \u201cneeded\u201d Greenland for security reasons, prompting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to warn that any attack by the US would spell the end of Nato.<\/p>\n<p>The White House said on Tuesday: \u201cThe president and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the US military is always an option at the Commander-in-Chief\u2019s disposal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nato is a trans-Atlantic military group where allies are expected to go to each other\u2019s aid in case of external attacks.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, six European allies expressed support for Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreenland belongs to its people, and only Denmark and Greenland can decide on matters concerning their relations,\u201d the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and Denmark said in a joint statement.<\/p>\n<p>Stressing they were as keen as the US in Arctic security, the European signatories of the joint statement said this must be achieved by Nato allies, including the US \u201ccollectively\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They also called for \u201cupholding the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Greenland\u2019s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen welcomed the statement and called for \u201crespectful dialogue\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dialogue must take place with respect for the fact that Greenland\u2019s status is rooted in international law and the principle of territorial integrity,\u201d Nielsen said.<\/p>\n<p>The issue of Greenland\u2019s future resurfaced in the wake of the US military intervention in Venezuela, during which elite troops went in to seize the country\u2019s President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and take him to face drugs and weapons charges in New York.<\/p>\n<p>A day after that raid, Katie Miller \u2013 the wife of one of Trump\u2019s senior aides \u2013 posted a map on social media of Greenland in the colours of the American flag, alongside the word \u201cSOON\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, her husband, Stephen Miller, said it was \u201cthe formal position of the US government that Greenland should be part of the US\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Asked repeatedly in an interview with CNN whether America would rule out using force to annex it, Miller responded: \u201cNobody\u2019s going to fight the US over the future of Greenland.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US President Donald Trump has been discussing \u201ca range of options\u201d to acquire Greenland, including use of the military, the White House said.
