President William Ruto has poured cold water on renewed attempts to revive the Azimio la Umoja coalition, saying the opposition outfit no longer carries political weight following the exit of key parties.<\/p>\n
Speaking in Nairobi on Sunday, Ruto questioned the rationale of resurrecting the coalition without the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which entered a coalition agreement with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in March 2025.<\/p>\n

The remarks come amid a dispute over leadership changes within the Azimio coalition initiated by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who chairs the coalition council.<\/p>\n
In the changes, Uhuru appointed Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as Azimio\u2019s new party leader, replacing the late Raila Odinga. Suna East MP Junet Mohamed was also replaced by MP Caroli Omondi as the coalition\u2019s secretary general.<\/p>\n
ODM has rejected the changes, arguing that appointments and removals within the coalition must be made collectively by leaders of all constituent parties, rather than unilaterally by a council chaired by Uhuru.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe power to appoint or remove is therefore neither unilateral nor vested in a single Party Leader, a clique of leaders, nor the Coalition Council acting independently,\u201d reads a letter by ODM addressed to the Registrar of Political Parties John Cox Lorionokou.<\/p>\n
The standoff comes amid early political realignments as parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.<\/p>\n
