{"id":130334,"date":"2026-02-09T06:03:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T06:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/guterres-condemns-escalating-violence-in-south-sudan-as-aid-operations-come-under-fire\/"},"modified":"2026-02-09T06:03:00","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T06:03:00","slug":"guterres-condemns-escalating-violence-in-south-sudan-as-aid-operations-come-under-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/guterres-condemns-escalating-violence-in-south-sudan-as-aid-operations-come-under-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Guterres condemns escalating violence in South Sudan as aid operations come under fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The UN Secretary-General\u00a0has strongly condemned\u00a0the surge in violence across South Sudan, warning that civilians and aid workers are paying a devastating price as humanitarian operations are increasingly targeted.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued by his Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq on Saturday,\u00a0the UN chief said nearly 10 million people \u201cmore than two thirds of the population\u201d now require life-saving humanitarian assistance and \u201ccontinue to bear the brunt of the conflict\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed grave concern over fighting, attacks and looting affecting humanitarian and health facilities, as well as movement restrictions and insecurity along key supply routes.<\/p>\n<p>These conditions, the statement said, are \u201ccrippling humanitarian operations and shutting down essential services, placing civilians, including aid workers, at serious risk\u201d.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Healthcare services attacked<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Since late December, at least 11 healthcare facilities have been attacked in Jonglei State alone, disrupting critical services for communities already under severe strain. The assaults have also involved the seizure of 12 vehicles, including an ambulance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past week alone,\u201d the statement noted, incidents have included \u201crepeated attacks\u00a0on a World Food Programme (WFP) convoy, an airstrike on a hospital run by the leading NGO M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res, and the burning of a Save the Children field office and destruction of its health centre\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General said that \u201cthis clear disregard for medical and humanitarian operations is unacceptable and must stop\u201d, stressing that such work \u201cmust be facilitated and respected\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The violence has driven mass displacement, with more than 370,000 people reportedly forced from their homes so far this year, including over 280,000 in Jonglei State, amid a rapidly worsening cholera outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>South Sudan, the world\u2019s youngest nation, gained independence from Khartoum in 2011 but soon descended into a brutal civil conflict marked by political rivalry, ethnic violence and repeated peace deal breakdowns.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u2018Immediate and decisive\u2019 end to fighting needed<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Despite a 2018 agreement, insecurity and localised fighting have continued to undermine stability and recovery.<\/p>\n<p>The UN chief called on all parties to \u201cimmediately and decisively halt all military operations\u201d, de-escalate tensions through dialogue, uphold international law, protect civilians and ensure safe, sustained humanitarian access, including the security of aid workers and UN peacekeepers.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/guterres-condemns-escalating-violence-in-south-sudan-as-aid-operations-come-under-fire\/\">Guterres condemns escalating violence in South Sudan as aid operations come under fire<\/a> appeared first on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/\">KBC Digital<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UN Secretary-General\u00a0has strongly condemned\u00a0the surge in violence across South Sudan, warning that civilians and aid workers are paying a devastating price as humanitarian operations are increasingly targeted.
