{"id":130778,"date":"2026-02-12T06:02:58","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T06:02:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/dawsons-creek-star-james-van-der-beek-dies-aged-48\/"},"modified":"2026-02-12T06:02:58","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T06:02:58","slug":"dawsons-creek-star-james-van-der-beek-dies-aged-48","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/dawsons-creek-star-james-van-der-beek-dies-aged-48\/","title":{"rendered":"Dawson\u2019s Creek star James Van Der Beek dies aged 48"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Actor James Van Der Beek, best known for his starring role in US teen drama Dawson\u2019s Creek, has died aged 48 after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,\u201d his family said in a statement posted to his social media accounts. \u201cHe met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The star was diagnosed with the disease in the latter half of 2023 but only revealed the news in November 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The father of six starred in multiple popular shows and films in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including the cult classic Dawson\u2019s Creek and Varsity Blues.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Business Insider, he revealed he started experiencing changes in his bowel movements, a common symptom of bowel cancer. He stopped drinking coffee to see whether that would help before having a screening test.<\/p>\n<p>That revealed he had stage three of the disease, which meant it had spread to nearby lymph nodes.<\/p>\n<p>Colorectal cancer develops from growths in the colon\u2019s inner lining and can spread if not treated, according to the Cleveland Clinic.<\/p>\n<p>More men develop this form of cancer than women. Increased screenings have helped detect it early \u2013 lowering the number of people who die from colorectal cancer, the clinic notes.<\/p>\n<p>Van Der Beek said his \u201clowest point\u201d in treatment was feeling like he was losing core parts of his identity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll these beautiful things that I love, and I used to define myself as \u2013 a father, a provider, a husband \u2013 all that got taken away, or at least paused,\u201d he said. \u201cI had to sit there and say, \u2018Well, what am I?\u2019 And it was, \u2018I\u2019m still worthy of love.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following his own diagnosis, Van Der Beek spent time raising awareness about screening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve learned a lot,\u201d he told Business Insider. \u201cIf I can save anyone from having to go through this, that\u2019s magic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Van Der Beek was one of the most famous faces on TV in the late 1990s and 2000s, starring as Dawson Leery alongside Katie Holmes in the hit TV show Dawson\u2019s Creek, which ran from 1998 to 2003.<\/p>\n<p>He also starred in the 1999 coming-of-age film Varsity Blues.<\/p>\n<p>He also played a fictionalised version of himself in the cult television show Don\u2019t Trust the B\u2014- in Apartment 23, and he performed on the 28th US season of Dancing with the Stars.<\/p>\n<p>Van Der Beek continued working through his diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, he guest starred in Prime Video college comedy, Overcompensating.<\/p>\n<p>Van Der Beek made a surprise virtual appearance at a Dawson\u2019s Creek reunion charity event on 22 September, having been forced to pull out of the live event due to having two stomach viruses.<\/p>\n<p>The reunion saw the likes of Michelle Williams, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson and Busy Philipps performing a live table reading of the show\u2019s pilot episode from 1998, joined by Lin-Manuel Miranda who stood in for Van Der Beek.<\/p>\n<p>The event raised funds for charity F Cancer and was also a tribute to their castmate.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with ABC News in 2020, Van Der Beek said he was very shy as a child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never wanted to be an actor as a kid. I wanted to be an athlete,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tributes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Condolences have been pouring in on the comments section of the family\u2019s post announcing Van Der Beek\u2019s death and across social media.<\/p>\n<p>In a post with photos over the years, Dawson\u2019s Creek co-star Busy Philipps mourned the loss of her friend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy heart is deeply hurting for all of us today\u2026every person who knew James and loved him, anyone who loved his work or had the pleasure of meeting him, all of his dear friends and community that surrounded him as he battled this illness,\u201d she wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>Philipps, who played Audrey Liddell on the series, directed her 2.4m followers to a fundraiser supporting his family to help with expenses, writing that she was \u201cheartbroken\u201d for them.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the family\u2019s Instagram announcement, Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar wrote that she is \u201cso sad for your beautiful family\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile James legacy will always live on, this is a huge loss to not just your family but the world,\u201d the actress wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Director and actress Olivia Munn added: \u201cI\u2019m so sorry. My prayers are with you and your beautiful family\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Actress Jennifer Garner described Van Der Beek\u2019s death as a \u201cheartbreaking loss\u201d and sent love to his widow Kimberly and their children as they \u201cnavigate this tender time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Model and make-up artist Tess Holiday said she was \u201cso incredibly sorry for your loss.
