{"id":131124,"date":"2026-02-14T19:05:03","date_gmt":"2026-02-14T19:05:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/rubio-says-us-and-europe-belong-together-despite-tensions\/"},"modified":"2026-02-14T19:05:03","modified_gmt":"2026-02-14T19:05:03","slug":"rubio-says-us-and-europe-belong-together-despite-tensions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/rubio-says-us-and-europe-belong-together-despite-tensions\/","title":{"rendered":"Rubio says US and Europe \u2018belong together\u2019 despite tensions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>MUNICH, Feb 14 \u2013  US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has assured European leaders the US does not plan to abandon the transatlantic alliance, saying its destiny \u201cwill always be intertwined\u201d with the continent\u2019s.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He told the Munich Security Conference: \u201cWe do not seek to separate, but to revitalise an old friendship and renew the greatest civilisation in human history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rubio criticised European immigration, trade and climate policies, but the overall tenor of the closely-watched speech was markedly different to Vice-President JD Vance\u2019s at the same event last year, during which he scolded continental leaders.<\/p>\n<p>European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she was \u201cvery much reassured\u201d by Rubio\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Rubio, the Trump administration\u2019s most senior diplomat, said it was \u201cneither our goal nor our wish\u201d to end the transatlantic partnership, adding: \u201cFor us Americans, our home may be in the Western Hemisphere, but we will always be a child of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I am here today to leave it clear that America is charting the path for a new century of prosperity, and that once again we want to do it together with you, our cherished allies and our oldest friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he repeated several criticisms repeatedly levelled at Europe by the Trump administration, including describing immigration policies as a threat to civilisation, and saying a \u201cclimate cult\u201d had taken over economic policy.<\/p>\n<p>On trade, he said Europe and the US had \u201cmade mistakes together\u201d by adopting a \u201cdogmatic vision of free and unfettered trade\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He repeated familiar calls from the US for Europe to invest more in defence, saying: \u201cWe want allies who can defend themselves so that no adversary will ever be tempted to test our collective strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response, Von der Leyen said: \u201c[Rubio is] a good friend, a strong ally. And this was, for me, very reassuring to listen to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She continued: \u201cWe want a strong Europe. And this is, I think, the message of today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in his half-hour address, Rubio said the system of international co-operation \u201cmust be rebuilt\u201d and singled out the UN for particular criticism, saying it had \u201cplayed virtually no role\u201d in resolving the Gaza and Ukraine conflicts.<\/p>\n<p>He also said the organisation was \u201cpowerless to constrain the nuclear programme\u201d of Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>In recent weeks, President Donald Trump has threatened strikes on Iran if no deal can be reached as negotiations intensify over curbing its nuclear weapons programme.<\/p>\n<p>A second round of talks between the US and Iran will be hosted by Oman in Geneva next week, the Swiss foreign ministry said on Saturday.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MUNICH, Feb 14 \u2013 US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has assured European leaders the US does not plan to abandon the transatlantic alliance, saying its destiny \u201cwill always be intertwined\u201d with the continent\u2019s.
