{"id":132041,"date":"2026-02-25T05:02:47","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T05:02:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/amid-bafta-backlash-bbc-says-airing-of-racial-slur-was-genuine-error\/"},"modified":"2026-02-25T05:02:47","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T05:02:47","slug":"amid-bafta-backlash-bbc-says-airing-of-racial-slur-was-genuine-error","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/amid-bafta-backlash-bbc-says-airing-of-racial-slur-was-genuine-error\/","title":{"rendered":"Amid Bafta backlash, BBC says airing of racial slur was genuine error"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UK broadcaster, BBC, is facing backlash for the airing of a racial slur aimed at American actors Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo by Tourette\u2019s campaigner John Davidson during the Baftas ceremony in what has largely been called \u201ca failure in their duty of care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following the backlash, the BBC says a racial slur was edited out of the Baftas ceremony before it was broadcast, but another one aired in error, the BBC\u2019s chief content officer has said.<\/p>\n<p>The shout was audible in the broadcast, which has since gone viral online.<\/p>\n<p>BBC content chief Kate Phillips emailed staff on Tuesday, reiterating the BBC\u2019s apology for it not being edited out of the broadcast, adding: \u201cWe understand how distressing this was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phillips confirmed other instances of offensive language had been removed, telling staff: \u201cThe edit team removed another racial slur from the broadcast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, the slur shouted when Lindo and Jordan were on stage \u201cwas aired in error and we would never have knowingly allowed this to be broadcast\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p>The use of the N-word on any BBC television programme is very rare and usually requires sign-off from a channel controller.<\/p>\n<p>The Bafta ceremony was shown on BBC One on a two-hour delay, with producers editing the show\u2019s length to fit its two-hour broadcast slot.<\/p>\n<p>According to the BBC, the producers overseeing the ceremony were doing so from a TV truck and simply did not hear the slur shouted when Lindo and Jordan were on stage. Davidson was not on mic or on stage at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips added: \u201cAward attendees were pre-warned about the possibility of involuntary verbal tics associated with Tourette syndrome at the start of the show, and [host] Alan Cumming addressed it during the broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, this doesn\u2019t lessen the impact and upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take full responsibility for what happened,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cWhen I was made aware it was audible on iPlayer, I asked for it to be taken down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Labour MP Dawn Butler previously asked director-general Tim Davie for an \u201curgent explanation\u201d for what happened, saying the N-word \u201cshould never have been aired\u201d and its broadcast was \u201cpainful and unforgivable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Monday, Bafta said it acknowledged the \u201charm this has caused, address what happened and apologise to all\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage at the time, and we apologise unreservedly to them, and to all those impacted.
