{"id":133819,"date":"2026-03-11T06:02:57","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T06:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/nairobi-film-festival-calls-for-submissions-ahead-of-october-event\/"},"modified":"2026-03-11T06:02:57","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T06:02:57","slug":"nairobi-film-festival-calls-for-submissions-ahead-of-october-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/nairobi-film-festival-calls-for-submissions-ahead-of-october-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Nairobi Film Festival calls for submissions ahead of October event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The annual Nairobi Film Festival, stylised as NBO Film Fest, is set to return from October 15 to 25 with a showcase of films and shorts from across Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of October, organisers have called for submissions from filmmakers, but this year the call comes with a small caveat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo support the festival\u2019s sustainability and strength, we\u2019ve introduced a small submission fee this year,\u201d organisers said. \u201cThis fee will help sustain the festival and help us keep championing bold, brilliant storytelling from Africa and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All filmmakers will be informed of the selection by September 1, but the deadlines and submission fees are as follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Early Deadline: March 31, 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Category<\/strong> \u2013 Feature Film; <strong>Price<\/strong> \u2013 $10<br \/>\n<strong>Category<\/strong> \u2013 Shorts: <strong>Price<\/strong> \u2013 $5<\/p>\n<p><strong>Regular Deadline: May 31, 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Category<\/strong> \u2013 Feature Film; <strong>Price<\/strong> \u2013 $20;<br \/>\n<strong>Category<\/strong> \u2013 Shorts; <strong>Price<\/strong> \u2013 $10<\/p>\n<p><strong>Late Deadline: July 15, 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Category<\/strong> \u2013 Feature Film; <strong>Price<\/strong> \u2013 $25;<br \/>\n<strong>Category<\/strong> \u2013 Shorts; <strong>Price<\/strong> \u2013 $10<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2017, the NBO Film Festival is among the few film festivals that take place in Kenya and is \u201cdevoted to celebrating African and African Diaspora cultures through film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, NBO Film Festival served as an exclusive venue to watch one of the breakout films and highlights from the 2025 festival, \u201cHow to Build A Library\u201d, a documentary which told the story of Wanjiru Koinange and Angela Wachuka, the founders of Book Bunk as they embarked on the task of restoring Nairobi\u2019s historic McMillan Memorial Library, a once-grand colonial relic built in 1932 exclusively for white patrons.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/how-to-build-a-library-is-a-triumph-and-a-love-letter-to-quiet-protests\/\">KBC Digital\u2019s review of the film<\/a>, this author argued that in its closing sequence, \u201cthe film subtly suggests that restoring a library and demanding better governance spring from the same impulse: the belief that public spaces, public institutions, and public power belong to the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the documentary lost the Grand Jury prize to \u2018My Father\u2019s Shadow\u2019 by Akinola Davies.
