{"id":136613,"date":"2026-04-04T10:02:51","date_gmt":"2026-04-04T10:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/ntsa-issues-easter-road-safety-guidelines-after-deadly-gilgil-crash\/"},"modified":"2026-04-04T10:02:51","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T10:02:51","slug":"ntsa-issues-easter-road-safety-guidelines-after-deadly-gilgil-crash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/ntsa-issues-easter-road-safety-guidelines-after-deadly-gilgil-crash\/","title":{"rendered":"NTSA Issues Easter Road Safety Guidelines After Deadly Gilgil Crash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya Apr 4 \u2013 The National Transport and Safety Authority has issued fresh road safety guidelines ahead of Easter travel after a devastating road crash at Gilgil claimed at least 11 lives on Good Friday night.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fatal accident occurred along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru Highway at around 9:30 p.m., when a public service vehicle collided with a stalled trailer near the Lake Oil bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Confirming the incident, Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winston Mwakio said the victims died on the spot due to the impact.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary investigations indicate that the matatu, operated by Likana Sacco and heading from Naivasha to Nakuru, rammed into the stationary truck under circumstances that remain under investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Only four  passengers survived the crash and were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving treatment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Horror on the Highway<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Witnesses described a gruesome scene, with the front section of the matatu completely crushed, trapping passengers inside.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency responders, assisted by members of the public, worked through the wreckage to retrieve bodies before clearing the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Police have since towed the wreckage for further inspection, while the bodies of the deceased were moved to a local mortuary pending identification and post-mortem examinations.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the tragedy, NTSA rolled out its 2026 Easter Usalama Barabarani campaign, warning motorists against risky behaviour on the roads.<\/p>\n<p>The authority singled out speeding and drunk driving as major contributors to road carnage, urging drivers to drive within the limit and stay within safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever drink and drive sobriety is the silent hero of every safe trip home,\u201d the agency said.<\/p>\n<p>NTSA also highlighted the dangers posed by stalled vehicles, directing motorists to remove broken-down vehicles from the road immediately and place warning signs at a safe distance to alert approaching drivers an issue believed to have contributed to the Gilgil crash.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u00a0\u2018Fatal Six\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The guidelines target the leading causes of accidents, including speeding, drink driving, driver fatigue, unroadworthy vehicles, stalled vehicles and lane indiscipline collectively referred to as the \u201cFatal Six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Drivers have been urged to plan their journeys in advance and get adequate rest to avoid fatigue, especially during the busy holiday period.<\/p>\n<p>Motorists are also required to ensure their vehicles are properly serviced before travel to minimise breakdowns on highways.<\/p>\n<p>The authority has called on members of the public to report cases of reckless driving through the 911 hotline, as part of efforts to enhance enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>The National Police Service has indicated that officers will be deployed along major highways to crack down on traffic violations during the Easter period.<\/p>\n<p>As investigations into the Gilgil crash continue, authorities are appealing to road users to exercise caution and responsibility.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya Apr 4 \u2013 The National Transport and Safety Authority has issued fresh road safety guidelines ahead of Easter travel after a devastating road crash at Gilgil claimed at least 11 lives on Good Friday night.
