{"id":137236,"date":"2026-04-10T05:02:46","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T05:02:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/india-proposes-new-rules-to-regulate-news-and-political-posts-on-social-media\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T05:02:46","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T05:02:46","slug":"india-proposes-new-rules-to-regulate-news-and-political-posts-on-social-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/india-proposes-new-rules-to-regulate-news-and-political-posts-on-social-media\/","title":{"rendered":"India proposes new rules to regulate news and political posts on social media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>DELHI, Apr 10 \u2013 The Indian government has proposed changes to extend its regulatory framework to a wider range of online news voices, including influencers and podcasters on platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and X.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last week, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) suggested amendments to India\u2019s IT rules \u2013 which govern digital media content \u2013 to include \u201cusers who are not publishers\u201d who share content related to \u201cnews and current affairs\u201d within a \u201ccode of ethics\u201d it currently applies to registered news publishers.<\/p>\n<p>Experts say this will potentially give the government more power over news-related posts shared by ordinary users, including independent journalists and podcasters.<\/p>\n<p>The government has proposed requiring social media platforms to follow orders and guidelines if they want to keep \u201csafe harbour\u201d protection \u2013 legal immunity from liability for content posted by users.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed amendments have alarmed digital rights activists and independent news creators, who say they could enforce near-total compliance with state-led censorship on social media platforms.
