This position was expressed in a statement published in Ottawa by Canada\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following a previous phone conversation between Anita Indira Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, and Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates.<\/p>\n
The statement also underlined that, acknowledging \u201cthe importance\u201d of the issue of Sahara to Morocco, Canada noted the adoption of UN Security Council resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025, and will act accordingly.<\/p>\n
Emphasizing \u201cthe need to reach a lasting, just, and mutually acceptable political settlement in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions,\u201d the Canadian ministry\u2019s statement describes the autonomy plan presented by Morocco as \u201ca serious and credible initiative in achieving a just and lasting settlement of the conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n
This shift in Canada\u2019s position comes ahead of an \u201cofficial visit to Morocco\u201d by Minister Anand \u201cin the coming weeks,\u201d which will provide an opportunity \u201cto further discuss the two countries\u2019 relations and to deepen discussions on Sahara,\u201d the statement concludes.<\/p>\n
